We're looking for a place with good food and drinks for a early dinner.

Petit Soleil next to the restaurant of that name has a lively bar scene - good drinks selection plus lots of tapas, French Canadian style and all delicious - tables too as well as stools.
Westwood Blvd south of Wilshire (valet parking)

Bar Toscana has a lively happy hour with excellent food. I also like The Hungry Cat in Santa Monica. Great drinks and great oyster bar.

Well.....not sure if this is what you're looking for as far as "fun." It's not really lively and full of people. But the food and drinks are very good and very well priced at Matteo's on Westwood Blvd. I hadn't been there for decades and recently moved to the neighborhood. I walked by and saw an ad for happy hour 5 to 8:30....every night but Monday and Saturday. I've been three of four times now and the food is always very good.....as are cocktails and wine. It's still very "rat pack"....but you can actually have a conversation and the staff there is very nice. I always seem to have the chopped salad ($7) and the Italian fish taco ($4). I'm not sure what's Italian about the taco, but it's made with fresh sole and is delicious. They have lots of other choices too....all well priced. A white (pinot grigio) and a red (montepulciano) are $5 and there are some nice discounted cocktails. Sinatra playing in the background. What's not to like?

Unless you are a senior citizen (which is ok) I would pass on Matteo's. It is decades past its prime. Eveleigh on Sunset has a fun Happy Hour and Frida in BH has a great happy hour with very reasonable food options. The Honor Bar in BH is also a good choice.
