Trying to find newish(?) small taco place Columbus(?) 68-72???

  • 3

A few weeks ago I stepped out of the rain into a really small (I believe) new place probably on Columbus in the upper 60s (north of Lincoln Center) or maybe low 70's. Can't remember name or exact location. It was a taco place and authentically Mexican, but upscale (for what it is) and hipster. They had a few tables including higher cafe/bar tables and a 3-sided bar/counter, several Mexican beers and the tequillas. Most of the menu was up on a whiteboard behind the counter.

Can anyone tell me what this place is?

  1. I think you're thinking of El Mitote.

    1. El Mitote is the place you mean; 208 Columbus Ave, between 69 and 70.

I had one meal there so far and wasn't too impressed. It wasn't bad, but it was not higher quality than the cart on Broadway and 70th, and Mitote had less "exotic" choices (e.g. no torta al lengua, which is one of my favorites). Of course, El Mitote is a sit-down restaurant, not a cart, so they serve different purposes.

      1. For the record, though, while El Mitote has some tacos, the emphasis is tortas.
