Going to Oxford by train to go to Bladon (Churchill grave) and wondering where is the best pub lunch close to the railway station?

  1. I'm not too familiar with the logistics in Oxford, but you can't do much better than lunch at the Magdalen Arms. The food is very good as many here agree.

Is it close to the station? Thanks for the info.

You could use a Google map to see where both places are in Oxford. I always go by car, but Oxford seems fairly walkable to me. And there are taxis.

The Magdalen Arms isn't very close to the station, but a taxi would get you there in ~10-15 minutes, depending on what town traffic is like.

Within walking distance of the station is The Punter, on Osney Island, my old local. I've never been there for lunch, only dinner, and their food is at the better end of the pub food spectrum.

In town, The Rickety Press in Jericho is well worth the 10 minute walk, although again I've only been there for dinner.

      2. I'm sure you know that Bladon is some miles (6+) from Oxford station so you are presumably using a taxi for that bit?

The Trout is about half way between the two, is on the river, and is excellent. I know it's not walking distance from the station but I'm sure the taxi would drop you off then return later.

Good to hear you like food at the Trout. My cousin recommended it recently. Are there any dishes you'd recommend?

My rec was based on several visits over the years. I was at school a few miles away and my parents used to take me out there occasionally. My last lunch there was a few years ago, so I'm afraid that I can't help about which dish to have, but I'd expect the standard to be pretty high.

            It's a lovely spot.

              Thanks.

        2. Too late for you now, but The Head of the River has a killer location, and decent food (IMO) the last time I was there:

15 minutes' walk from the train station.

I ended up having 2 dinners at The Head of the River while I was in Oxford. Decent food, good prices, friendly servers. I liked their smoked haddock and salmon cakes, their gratin potatoes, and my friend liked their steak enough to order it twice!
