Anything good in Pomona?

  • n

Heading to the FOX theater for a show tomorrow night, going to be looking for some food and maybe drinks before the show.

Anyone got some suggestions? Low key is better.

El Merendero used to be located in the Fox Theatre until they remodeled. Now they are located across the street. The bakery has good conchas.

As for food, tacos or bust imo. There is a Joey's BBQ location right there but I have never been a fan. Tijuana tacos would be my choice, eaten on the hood of my car. lol

There is also Los Jarritos on Towne Ave but like El Merendero, just mediocre.

Tijuana tacos eh? Looks pretty legit, trompo with pineapple to boot.

What's good there? Al pastor I hope?

All the meats are pretty good. Pastor is great, but is a bit inconsistent at times. I really like the buche and cabeza but that is just a personal preference and I usually get it whenever I get tacos. Carne asada is great quality, plate meat that is grilled and done right.

Basically, you cannot go wrong with tacos there.

          Also, complimentary beans. :)

            fantastic, tijuana tacos it is.

i'll have to try tijuana tacos too, is it right around the corner from the Fox theater, next door to the sports bar ?

      2. The Back Abbey in nearby Claremont. It may be beer & wine only though.

        1. right across the street from the Fox Theater

          El Merendero
          242 S Garey Ave
          Pomona, CA

          Low key for sure

The chicken nachos deluxe (or supreme) are very good.

oh snap I love me some chicken nachos. Thanks for the rec; they got alcohol by chance?

              1. re: laliz

ok did not actually eat here but I stopped by.

chips and salsa were terrible. thick chips with (what felt like) salsa roja.

                BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY:
a large selection of beer. $3 for domestic, $3.50 for import. Less than 50% cost of the FOX across the street. so come by and get loaded before the show.

              2. Maybe not exactly a pre-show kind of place, but for great soul food go to Cassie's Soul Food Kitchen! It's definitely low-key. Open till 7:00 pm.

Damn, I missed Cassie's last time I was in those parts.

But I did visit the you buy, we fry joint for a fried oyster sandwich which was almost perfect except for the spongey supermarket bun. Just imagine if that sucker was served on a loaf of french bread.

                2. ok so we actually did not end up at tijuana tacos last night. SO wanted some wetzels pretzels so we ended up at "The Shoppes" in Chino Hills (about 5-7 miles away).

well when we rolled up to barnes and noble, there was a BRUXIE right there.

We got a patty melt and the creme brulee. oh my god this place is so freaking good. waffles were perfect, everything was perfect. < $15 for 2 waffles.
