Where can poor but hungry people go for good food in Tremont St neighborhood?

Picco is very good. Vejigantes was good as well, and not that expensive. I'd make reservations, though.

Of course my favorite of all in that area is Addis Red Sea, which is my go to place before the theater.

If you are willing to walk a little bit in any direction, there are a lot of good options.

Toward Back Bay, Salty Pig, Giacomo's on Columbus next to Anchovies.

Franklin Cafe is close, good, perhaps a little bit more expensive but less than other places in the S. End.

The Gallows or Myers and Chang on Washington.

Orinoco for Venezuelan, El Triunfo for cheap Mexican, Vejigantes for Puerto Rican.

The Buttery also serves inexpensive dinners.

+1 for Vejigantes. Totally different and delicious.

nothing fancy, but from-scratch italian, --anchovies.

slightly more spendy, but entrees all under $20, is coda.

both of these are on columbus, rather than tremont, but a quick walk.

if it's a nice night, you could sandwiches at formaggio and sit outside someplace.

Depending on the budget, you can get great meals and a nice experience at both Metropolis and Picco. And both are just a quick walk to the calderwood.
