Secret Vices and Pet Peeves

Can't believe I am confessing this but Mme Zoe and I both just love "Sushi on the Round" - the moving sushi twirling around like a toy engine track - we just tried Zuma (?) downtown - very fun experience sitting at a table rather than the bar and next week will try the restaurant in the humongeous new building at Atlantic Blvd north of Garvey. Much better sushi elsewhere but the thrill of the track is amazing.

Pet Peeve of last week: having dinner at Palomino with friends, one of whom does not drink and ordered an O'Douls. Waiter said, Oh I see you are going light tonight. Ugh.

We've always gone to Frying Fish, probably because that was Pa-in-law's favorite (it's relatively cheap), and we like the eclectic crowd. One of these days I've GOT to get one of those fancy rolls that remind me of miniature parade floats …

I refuse to let any waiter's comments bother me, as long as it's not openly and deliberately rude. A busperson's running off with my plate before I'm damned good and ready to relinquish it, however, will get a sharp rebuke.

    2. Last week I was at Genghis Cohen in the Fairfax district to hear someone sing. Looking at the menu I noticed they made sweet and sour pork, which I haven't had in many, many years.
It was a little too sweet and not the best version I can recall, but I must admit I did enjoy it a lot. I don't recommend it, but I haven't had any old school chinese in eons. Now if they only served hom yu, hmmmm.....

      1. Today? Well, lets see ...

Vice (secret or otherwise): French fries with ranch dressing at Hi-Life Burger

Pet peeve: warm ranch dressing and cold fries, anywhere.

          Hi ipse,

i know your not-so-secret fish sandwich vice (which, by the the way i share with you)

What is your french fry secret vice?

And, do you like onion rings and, if so, where?

            GJ,

Not sure I have a *secret* vice for fries, but one of my (many) vices when it comes to fries is probably the avocado fries at Connal's.

And (shhh!), here's my secret onion ring vice. Y'know about The Hat, right? And you no doubt know about their chili, pastrami fries (topped with chopped onions and tomatoes), right? Well, did you know that, if you ask nicely, they'll do the same dish with onion rings? Yes, that's right, a chili, pastrami onion ring gastronomical delight (topped with onions and tomatoes).

              Oh ipse,

Must have soon. Top of my bucket list. Better than caviar and foie gras :)

That sounds like even more of a heart attack on a platter.

          2. Folks, please help us keep this thread relevant to the LA area, and keep your responses focused on Vices and Peeves local to Los Angeles. Thanks!
