I'll be in Houston for one night and am searching for the best of both worlds: Delicious food and good atmosphere for schmoozing clients. I prefer either authentic (as authentic as it gets outside Mexico anyway) Mexican or very good Tex Mex. It doesn't have to be high-end dining, but some ambiance and table service is necessary...if only because we need to meet for longer than 30 minutes. Thanks in advance.

  1. 1. Jalapeno's on Kirby, just south of Westheimer near River Oaks. This might be your best bet.

    2. Ninfa's on Navigation, South of downtown. Do not go to any other Ninfa's. This one is the original. Don't let the obscure location fool you.

    2. El Meson - Mexican/Cuban in the Rice Village. Pretty hip part of town.

I agree with Midtown Coog (even if I'm an Owl). Jalapeno's would be my top choice, too.

    2. If you want to really get down, try Fiesta En Guadalajara on Irvington just north of downtown, especially on Friday or Saturday night. Don Key in Pasadena is fun also, so is Pico's on Bellaire Blvd. (arguably best Tex-Mex in town, but that's a tough one).

Pico's is one of the best Tex-Mex with Merida on Navigation and Asi es Mexico on Wirt providing tough competition. Irvington is a goldmine for small, out of the way places: Gorditas is one of the best. Haven't tried the other two mentioned here, but I plan on checking them out. Most of the restaurants discussed in other postings here are much heavier on the "Tex" than the "Mex" for Tex-Mex food.

      2. Irma's (downtown) and Pico's, on Bellaire.
