Has anyone seen ramps for sale yet?

  1. It seems a little early in the year still, especially when so many places have been getting a late start on spring.

Ramps just started this week out of West Virginia and have been available in limited supplies in the wholesale market. It will probably be a few weeks until they are available for retail.

    2. first place i saw them last year was russo's. maybe worth a call.

I saw them at Russo's today. $20/lb, if I remember correctly.

      2. Ramps are wonderful, but we are loving them to death. Please consider giving ramps a pass this year.

once a year is too frequent? it is always great when i see some seasonal food appear; it is the circle of life

do you mean sustainable-wise, or board-talk-wise?

            1. re: enhF94

Apparently sustainable-wise. Here's a blog post from last year with links to several other posts and articles on the problem: http://agroforestrysolutions.blogspot...

              1. re: enhF94

Sustainable-wise. The places in the wild where they are harvested cannot regenerate them fast enough to meet demand.

              2. re: chiba

Yes. Ramps are wild and they are in danger of being picked to extinction in some areas.

              3. Probably the end of April for local ramps.

                1. Tavern Road has a ramp risotto on the menu. There were a few small white stems in my portion but they could have been white asparagus, I guess. Seemed kind of large for a ramp stem. The presence of leaves was almost non-existent. Too hard to tell what was actually in there.

                  1. I found wild ramps for sale at the Fruit Center Marketplace in East Milton Sq last weekend.

                    1. I saw them at the Hingham Whole Foods yesterday. Looked good!

                      1. They were at Russo's over the weekend at about $20/lb. I've also seen them at Formaggio recently.

Saw some this past weekend at Russo's - I think they were less than 20/lb, but there were only a few, and they looked like they had seen better days.

There were gorgeous ones today at Russo's, at $20/pound, also fiddle heads at $15/pound.

I saw them on Saturday - they looked great. I also picked up some fiddleheads.

                        2. Saw them for $12.99/lb. at the Fruit Center Marketplace in Milton earlier today.

                          1. I just bought some this morning (April 30th) at the Whole Foods at Fresh Pond.

                            1. Not on the sales side, but we had a lovely side of ramps this week at Boston Chops.
