Should a hostess gift be unwrapped as soon as it is given to you or should you wait until you can "peek" and thank the guest in person during the event?

A hostess gift needn't be unwrapped as soon as it is presented. As a committed giver of gifts, hostess and otherwise, I have no expectation of a gift being unwrapped in my presence. If there are other guests at an event to which I brought a hostess gift, I would expect the gift to be opened later, after all the guests have gone home.

Completely agree. Particularly in a situation when not everyone has brought a specific gift. Unless it's an event like a shower or birthday where gifts are more widely expected or appropriate to be opened in front of the giver.
