Dolomites hotel/restaurant recommendation
We are headed to Italy with our 4-year-old and six-month-old in late August. We have about 3-4 days for the Dolomites, and I am looking for a hotel with a good restaurant, near beautiful walks. Preferably not more than a 3-hour drive from Venice. Any single place stand out?
Check out the Hotel Maribel in Madonna di Campiglio.
We had a glorious 3 night stay there. There were other families with kids and we were the only Americans.
Eating there is very good but the best thing is the service. Top notch!
Don't miss the Polenta taragna. It's polenta mixed with buckwheat flour.
We loved the Lagacio in San Cassiano. It does not have a restaurant, but there are many other good places nearby (several in hotels - if you really want a hotel with a restaurant physically inside vs a few yards off), and it has a fantastic breakfast (like a selection of hyperlocal cheeses that changed daily - or really nice granola if you're one of those people with "willpower"). The views from the hikes we took were just incredible, and there are some nice rifugi in the area for lunch.
Lagacio also seems like it would be great for traveling with kids, since all the rooms are apartment style, but you still have the hotel amenities.
Emilie said it very well... The Lagacio, which is right down the street from where we stay for 2 1/2 months in the summer (we're very partial to the town:)), is quite nice and would be very good with children.
San Cassiano is a special place. Quiet, with a lot to do or nothing to do. Mostly Italians. The area around it is, for us, the best in terms of food in The Dolomiti.
This pretty much covers it. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/792999
