Spoke Wine Bar

uman Apr 2, 2013 08:10 AM

Just checked this new and cozy place out in Davis Square....wow, the food and drink are really good. The highlights were the Peekytoe crab crostini(warm), lamb sausage(so smooth), and piquillo pepper/almond spread with really delicious toasts(charred yumminess and black pepper). I tried a glass of wine and a cocktail- a beaujolais blanc(first I ever heard of a white beaujolais) and one of the cocktail specials, the afterword, which had mezcal and chartreuse. Both were very good. The dessert I had was chocolate mousse with dark chocolate crunchy crumbs and sea salt- holy cow. I want one right now... I will be back to work my way through the rest of the menu, but not tonight as they are closed on Tuesdays.
It is a great addition to the neighborhood.

Has anyone been to Spoke recently?

I stopped by this weekend for some (excellent) wine and cheese. It was busy-ish when we got there at about 8:30, but had almost completely cleared out by 9:30 or so. I overheard a server saying it had been slow recently.

I've always had a great time there, and I think the food is some of the best in the area. This should be a busy time of year, right? Is the price point too high for Davis Square? Thoughts?

I went a few weeks ago on a weeknight at 7:30pm and the place was fairly empty. We loved almost all the food we split and the wine options were as lovely as ever. I'm not sure why it's not busy, but I'm also not complaining.

It does seem to have slowed down a little. We still go regularly and have never had a bad meal there, with frequent gems.

Thanks for mentioning Spoke. We've only been once and enjoyed it. Will put it on the list.

We've been twice already and have tasted a total of 10 dishes of various sizes, ranging from very good to really great. Wines by the glass were all really interesting. Service was super friendly - a couple kinks the first time we were there but that was like the second day they were open.

If I had to change anything I'd maybe add a few more wines by the glass, and have a real cocktail menu with a dozen items or so just to get the ball rolling. They have three cocktail specials on a board behind the bar (which were all good) but that's all that's written down. Some descriptive text on the wine list would be great too.

Really an outstanding addition to the area, even better than I thought it would be.

Puffeney, Huet, Lopez de Heredia, Coudert, Selbach-Oster, among others... all current release vintages, but that's a decent, even mildly interesting wine list.

EDIT: Oh, I see there's a relationship with Dave's Fresh Pasta. I'm guessing Flea must be doing the wine list as many of those wines are sold at Dave's.

How many seats are in there? I am really happy at the thought of a "grown-up bar" back in Davis Square.

there were about 10 barstools, 10 hightops, 2 lowtops, and 2 booths at the window. I was able to get a seat without a problem. I was with a few people and we were seated at one of the booths near the window :)

Though I imagine crowds will keep me away for quite a while, Paul Christie (formerly of Gargoyles, also co-owns Davis Squared and Arlington Centered) is bartending, and he is both an excellent drink-mixer and customer-caregiver.

Also Drink-alum California Gold is involved with the bar program!

Didn't see a cocktail menu (just wine and food) online, but it sounds like there's one to check out.
