Via Veneto - Excellent Food But...
Went there on Saturday night with a group of 10. The waiter suggested we order family style. Small amounts to taste a bunch of things. They'd bring our appetizer, pasta course and main dishes. The meal was delicious.
The surprise came at the end of the meal when the bill came. The seafood course which consisted of 2 langoustines and a smallish piece of fish came to $48. The food itself averaged about $125 per person. Via Veneto is not cheap by any means but several people at the table thought there should have been some mention of cost or at least something directional when the family style menu was offered. There was brief discussion of what items not to bring and some talk of what we wanted. Price never came into picture but since we ordered essentially what ended up being prix fixe many were surprised when the bill came.
We're all big boys and girls. We could have asked if it really mattered that much. But do you think there should have been any mention of price before the menu was set and delivered?
Here is what we ate
- burrata and heirloom tomatoes (standard but delicious)
- mushroom with fried spinach and parmesan (loved the fried spinach with the cheese and grilled mushroom)
- calamari with shrimp and scallops (much better than fried calamari)
- penne arrabiata (spicy, al dente and seductive)
- fettucine bolognese (tasty but pasta a little more cooked than I like)
- asparagus ravioli (excellent seasonal rendition)
- langoustine (grilled to perfection)
- fish (least favorite of the main courses)
- veal chop (best veal chop I've ever eaten finished with butter sage sauce)
- steak (great cut, nice marbling)
