Tokyo Ramen - Monterey Park

Went on a second visit prior to posting a quick review here.

1st Visit:
1. Had the tonkatsu ramen combo with spicy scallop roll
2. Nigiri selection of tai, halibut and albacore
3. Cheesecake

Feedback: For the price, unbeatable. Especially for the lunch combo. Ramen is pretty good and sushi is fresh.

2nd Visit:
1. Had the tonkatsu ramen combo with spicy albacore roll
2. 2 Aji's, nigiri selection of albacore and halibut
3. Chocolate Cheesecake

Feedback: Chocolate cheesecake is excellent. Again, the pricing WRT to freshness is unbeatable.

I like the fact that I can have sushi and the kid can have ramen + dessert. With all selections being above average.

Place had been open for 8 months according to the sushi chef. This might be my default lunch place if I am in the neighborhood if I don't feel like Shinshengumi.

p.s. do not expect high-end sushi dining.

my bad..typo. I did post a pic and also posted a new thread about dinner at King Hua...but they were deleted by the mods?

The ramen was good, they used the curly noodles which i like. Broth was not too overwhelming or oil.

my only 'issue' was that they would not deep fry the Aji bones; but I think it was miscommunication -> the chef didn't speak english very well.

i'm not really sure, i replied then it was gone

gonna try posting it one more time.

oh, another tip for this place is to definitely sit at the sushi bar.

Chef's english might not be good and is kind of quiet, but he does open up with recommendations after a bit.

Personally I thought it was mediocre when I went during the opening month, not sure if they made it better since then but it's basically on par with Daikokuya which isnt hard.

      3. How much is the lunch combo and what does it include?

Lunch combo is cost of ramen (various pricing, I think the Ox-tail and spicy miso are $1 more) and you can pick one item (out of a list..e.g., gyoza, fried rice, scallop/tuna/albacore rolls etc) for an additional $2.50.

So about $10 ($7.50+2.50). I liked the rolls selection, about 8 count if i recall correctly.

If you eat there often, I can recommend a website that sells gift certificates for tokyo ramen $7 for $10. shipping is free if you order 4 or more. Send me a message if you're interested.

        2. They opened end of May '12. Thanks for the feedback. They also serve beer and the Lighthouse coupons are here: (unrelated to me, I'm not a sales affiliate, blah blah blah).

          1. Sadly, talked to the boss today and he said tomorrow will be their last day.

Had 2 Aji as final adios..

Crappy location with ramen that wasn't really destination worthy so why go out of the way? Harsh reality but if you don't differentiate yourself in an off the beaten path location then the cards are stacked against you from the start.
