Parameters: (1) We don't eat red meat or pork. (2) Cocktails are as important as food.

Avenue 5, Saltbox and I would add Grant Grill at the US Grant Hotel to the mix..

      I've not eaten at Saltbox.
I have eaten at Grant Grill and Brooklyn Girl and Ave 5.

      I vote Ave 5.

Agree with BC that you should add Grant Grill - We have been to Ave 5 and Grant Grill (mainly to the Lounge for cocktails and some small plate and dessert). Ave 5 has better and more creative food than Ave 5 (and is one of the more underrated restaurants in SD) with good (but not great) cocktails. Grant has decent food but some of the best cocktails we had in SD.

Ave 5 for sure. We've been enjoying their food and drinks for about four years now.

Haven't tried Saltbox. I find BG to be wholly inconsistent. The menu offerings just don't seem to live up to the hype nor price. It isn't bad, mind you. It gets crowded early and they do not take reservations, so that isn't ideal.

Brooklyn Girl is taking reservations. They are also on OpenTable

Funny- it's the only way I'd recommend Brooklyn Girl.

            With great reservation.

If you are looking to go to Ave 5, you'd better go quick... they're shutting their doors soon. They were just meh anyways, even with them cooking out of the Alinea cookbook, so you're not missing much.

There is talk for about the last 7-8 months that they are trying to sell Ave5

No, this is different from that. They're closing soon without selling the restaurant. Them selling was also more than talk, they've had the restaurant up with CRE brokers for 6 or so months. Rent is too high.

Ah the famous high rent of ground floor leasing of San Diego.

Grant Grill would be my pick - they're well equipped to get people out in time for the 7 PM curtain and have excellent cocktails. Murder in the Cathedral is excellent. Enjoy.
