hal2010 Mar 27, 2013 07:20 PM

Noticed this on a travel site:

http://www.afar.com/magazine/wanderin...

He mentions Chiado, Albert's and Rua Vang Golden Turtle

But Susur loves it and Samuelsson probably got the rec from him ("all my chef buddies recommend it"), so he may not have tried other spots.

Eh, I like it. Is it the best? Probably not. But I think it's far from sucking.

I think Tien Thanh is a better choice for pho, but I don't necessarily expect it to be named as such by everyone that tries it. If I were a first timer to Toronto and a buddy recommended those three places and took me to dine at each, if I had a good experience, I'd having nothing but good things to report. That isn't to say that foodies in town won't suggest other places and they'd be as good or better. The fact is, the three places Samuelsson visited were solid, to him. No more and no less. Why should we criticize? It's natural to feel disappointed that your own top places didn't get a shout-out from him, but it doesn't make his compliments any less valid.

+1, he's just sharing his opinion based on his experiences--for him to have an intimate appreciation of what's what in the toronto scene is a bit unfair. i'm sure if we all had a friend like susur lee in a town that we didn't know super well, we'd lean on their opinion too.

now, given that his wife is apparently part of our ethiopian community, i'd really like to know what he thinks about our various offerings from that cuisine. i have eaten at about a half dozen of toronto's places, and while all of them have been solid, none have been spectacular. . .

Famous chef says nice things about Toronto, therefore must tear him down.

Tear him down? Was an honest question. I've never been...

Sorry I misread. But they don't quote him as saying the jerk is authentic. He says Albert's is authentic and they go on to mention jerk chicken.
Anyway... ask an out-of-towner for recs and you are bound to get recs that might seem a little off to obsessed locals. Maybe he was just trying to be nice.

those are all totally decent, serviceable restaurants that would not necessarily be first choices, but i wouldn't be mad to end up at any of them. to say that any of them suck seems a bit... retarded

I was at the Raptor's game last night and I swear they zoomed in on a guy that looked just like Marcus Samuelsson! Made me think of this thread.

i just re-read the interview and stand corrected--his wife has family in toronto--don't think this actually means she is from toronto. . .

that being said, samuelsson has restaurant interests in chicago, nyc, and sweden. . .why not toronto? maybe chang opened up some eyes?
