Buchanan’s Chop House and Whisky Bar

We went to Buchanan's on the weekend for the first time in about 10 years. They offered a 3-course special for dinner, with two choices for each course, at $39.99. There was also a recommended wine for $10/glass, a decent wine and a very generous pour - definitely not a standard 5-6oz.

The place is in need of a bit of an update for sure - especially the restrooms. The food was very nicely done, but not in a trendy/upscale way. It was a nice change from all the restaurant group places out there now. The service was excellent until we went to leave and had to go in the back closet to get our own coats. Odd, because they weren't that busy but not really a big deal.

I have heard the burgers are excellent ($18) but the server's description that it was 'very garlicky' turned me off. I like beef burgers, not garlic burgers but I may go back to give it at try and test some of their huge scotch collection! Either way.. I will be back!

  1. I used to work at the Shaw building (not for Shaw) and Buchanan's was our after work place, mostly because the wine selection was so good and others could get a pint. At the time, 3 years ago, they also had great bar food, interesting nachos and more upscale wings and sauces. I always enjoyed their burger and do not remember it being garlicky, but instead the meat being house ground and cooked to order... which is pretty rare in Calgary (no pun intended).

I hope it's still there when I get back to Calgary.
