It's part the time of year (even modern "root cellars" can only hold produce so long) and part the weather - onions not protected from a frost in transport/delivery/storage will turn to mush, and we have had some unpredictable weather.
Yes, they've been HORRIBLE -- so bad that if I'm shopping at Winn-Dixie I get frozen ones instead. (I also keep a big container of dried onions from Costco around, mostly to use in meatloaf, but in a pinch . . . ).
