lunch places near Alta Bates on Telegraph? [San Francisco]

  • 9

My office is at Telegraph & Russell. It's a 5-minute walk to College, but we're all getting pretty tired of the usual places on College. Has anyone tried any of the little places on Telegraph in that general area? Temescal is great but a little too far for a quick lunch. Thanks

  1. The sandwiches and salads at Mokka (Telegraph at Dowling, two blocks south of Ashby) are good, in my experience.

    1. I really like the buffet at Bacheeso: fresh salads, big selection and wide variety of dishes. You gotta ask for slices of the fresh roasted turkey...

      1. 2nd buffet @Bacheeso. had it at oaktown location, lots of variety, good value.

have u tried Padi (indonesian) @2965 college. ? totally different.

        1. I've been going to Bacheeso in Oakland and like it quite a bit, but we were pretty disappointed in the lunch buffet in Berkeley the other day. Everything sort of tasted the same, the salads were all mayonnaise-based. Not great.

yo LM, that's startling to me -- I've been to that location several times and have always been impressed. i wonder if you arrived at the end of the lunch serving? or in between things (which is not an excuse, btw). Or perhaps an off-day and not a trend.

          2. You may already have tried Ethiopia since it is on Telegraph near Russell -- I haven't been there in years. It was OK, the big selling point is the nice patio in the back when weather is good.
Have you tried it and what did you think?

            1. There's also Tai San on Telegraph near Stuart. I've never been.
              Any reports?

              1. In a pinch there is always the AB cafeteria. Their soups are pretty good and you can make yourself a sandwich just like you were at home. I went to the dentist last Thursday and ran in there and got a big plate of spaghetti with meat sauce just like mom used to make.

You have probably already been to Whole Foods and there is always The Smokehouse. There is an Ethiopian place near Alcatraz whose name I have forgotten, but the food is good. You could walk down to Shattuck and Ashby. There is a nouveau bbq place down there that some here like.

The Ethiopian place near Alcatraz is Cafe Colucci. It's good though I haven't tried Ethiopia to compare.
