New posts at top of threads? Able to be turned off?

jgg13 Mar 23, 2013 07:40 AM

I've noticed recently that new posts are finding there way to the top of the reads, which is extremely offputting when one is trying to read a thread chronologically. Is there some way to disable this bu^H^Hfeature?

Click on the clock icon on the thread's page. Note that when you find you need to log in to CH it will have defaulted and you'll need to again click the clock.

Sweet, thanks. Stupid that you can't just set it once b at least they're not forcing this idiotic sorting on everyone

Agree. This is an idiotic move that is unlike most other discussion forums.

Thanks--that's helpful. It's especially confusing because it doesn't happen with every thread.

I just noticed this "feature". How dumb. Why did they do this? Did people complain about not being able to see the newest first. How many people prefer to see newest post first? I think more people would want to see oldest first. Maybe they should make the "oldest posts first" the default and let those that want to read the newest first click a little button.

Isn't this because most people are viewing on a mobile device and scrolling all the way down to the bottom for new posts vs having them at the top.
Sure it has helped on the De Quervain's Syndrome.

          Personally, I love it.

It has its plusses (well, plus) but it gets very confusing when reading a thread for the first time in a while. Instead of the discussion flowing more or less chronologically it's now spread around in a jumble.

No, I don't think most people are viewing on a mobile device. As greygarious said, just click on the # of posts for the thread you want to read from within your profile, and you'll go to the oldest new post.

                Aloha Linda!
I'd be curious what % on CH is viewing on their mobile/tablet.

Google Analytics is a great tool to find out who your audience is.

Except software like Ghostery and AdBlock can block the Google Analytics's cookies and trackers. And for those that aren't blocked (estimated at over 50%), Google put out a study that shows that there are up to 4 duplicate cookies among the 30-35% of those unique user cookies that are actually reachable. So the information Google Analytics would be using is already flawed.

I prefer it to having to scroll down through possibly 100's of posts to see a new response that may only say "I agree" or "+1".

You don't have to scroll. If you've read the post before, there's a blue dot to the left of the title, meaning one or more posts have been added since you last read the thread. When you click onto the number of posts, the page locates to the first of the unread posts. If instead you click onto the name of the most recent poster, the page goes straight to that post.

greygarious, thank you, thank you, thank you. Somehow I'd missed that tip in all my time on chowhound. You've just improved my chowhound experience. Of course, if I find myself spending more time in the Not About Food mega-threads, I'll blame you.

I too find this very aggravating. Would it be so hard to save the preference for oldest-first vs. newest-first as a setting in one's profile? I looked for that, but there's nothing. CH developers, please add this function!

Hi everyone. We're working on a fix for this so that once you've set your preference (once you've clicked the clock button to sort threads in your preferred way) it will stick even if you're logged out or have cleared your cookies. Stay tuned!

DeborahL this is wonderful news. Could you consider taking it a step further in the future. As you add new features like this, always consider making it an option that can be managed in the users profile... regardless of what change is done, you are always going to aggravate some users, so the ability to customize it will eliminate this problem.

This fix is now in place, so nobody should have to be clicking the clock button regularly at this point if they don't want to. Whatever you choose will remain as your default.

Let us know if anyone is still seeing problems with this, and thanks for your patience!

Thanks very much, Dave! I had to clear my cookies/cache here at work first thing today due to another issue, and then had to log back into Chowhound. I hadn't even thought that I *should* have to be clicking the clock to have threads in oldest-to-newest format. But I didn't have to. Thanks again.

Dave thank you very much. Can you explain how to "set" your default? Is is device specific or account specific?

To set your default, just click the clock button on any discussion. Then, when you go to another discussion, the sort order will remain the same. It will continue to stay in place on that device.

You may find, depending on your devices' settings, that you'll have to do this once for each device you use. But because of this change, your setting should stick now and you won't need to regularly press the clock button unless you want to.

I also find this very frustrating. On every other site that offers the option, I always click "Oldest Posts First" Actually, sites that default to newest first even annoy me a bit. I can't imagine why anyone would want to read the latest entries without having read all the previous content. I think that a reader opening a thread for the first time - and able to read all replies in chronological order - outweighs the people who just want an easier way to see the last one or two replies. Perhaps it is just me....

I just don't understand why something so seemingly counter-intuitive would be the default setting.
