Partially unread threads continuing to open in Newest First

This has been ongoing for several days. And it doesn't happen ALL the time. Just happened this morning on the WFD #201 thread. I last read it about 9:30pm last night (at home on my laptop). You can see the two latest posts at the top on this screen cap. Butt there are at *least* 15 new posts I haven't read.

And yes, I had already reset the little clock to show the thread in Chrono order. That resetting of the clock doesn't seem to be "sticking".

  1. Same experience here this morning on the order.

Although when I reset the setting, so far it appears to be sticking.

    Thanks for reporting it LW.

This first started happening yesterday here at work. (Shhhh! I'm also doing some work as well!). And when I came in this a.m., my computer had auto-rebooted because of various Windows and/or security updates.

BUT my cache and cookies weren't deleted with that update. But I'm wondering if the reboot had anything to do with it.

Making me crazy too. I used to have it happen when I wasn't logged on, and my stupid phone was part of the problem but today it's back and I'm logged on to CH on the old faithful Toshiba laptop. I am happier with the descending order of things in general.

        1. re: LindaWhit

You know I had a security update via WIN myself yesterday.
But, I didn't experience any reverse order issues until this morning and I read a # of threads all day yesterday without a reserve order appearance.

I don't know, this morning I did notice it immediately because a new comment was at the, all I did was hit the clock icon above and the reverse took hold and now it seems fine.

          Hope your issue is fixed.

I was being driven so crazy by the wierd post order this morning, I finally came here to find out WTF..... see it's happening to others.

Glad to know about clock button. Never noticed or used it before. Is it a new feature?

            1. re: gingershelley

I honestly don't know, gingershel. Threads always used to sort with oldest first....I *think* with the most recent changes, they had them sorting newest first, and there was a bit of a rebellion. So perhaps this was the "best of both worlds" fix.

        2. I just came in to complain about this.

What the hell, Chow?? Stop messing with the UI please. Just when it was back to mostly okay after the last huge modification debacle. Gah!

          1. I'm not able to replicate this here. When I go into a discussion that is partially unread, it's appearing in chronological order (oldest on top), which is how I currently have my settings. My sort order (clock) button works properly, and is sticking correctly.

LindaWhit, have you logged out of your account since yesterday? I'd suggest closing all windows/tabs, logging out completely, then logging back in. Let us know if you're still seeing this problem after that point.

Aha -- that is the very problem. The clock defaults to not set (clicked), whereas the prior behavior was always to sort that way. So this new feature broke existing behavior/expectations.

              1. re: davis_sq_pro

Yes, you will need to click the button to set your default. This is explained here:

The change we made has some advantages, though. Mainly, when you click the sort button now, it will maintain your collapsed state (whether it's partially, fully, or not collapsed). Sorry for the inconvenience of having you reset it.

              2. re: Dave MP

Neither on my laptop at home or desktop here at work was I logged out of CH. I just click the close window when I leave work.

The way you have your settings is exactly as I have them. And yesterday morning, I clicked the clock to set them that way when I realized they were in Newest First order. That worked all day, but this morning is when I saw that it had reverted to Newest Order. Clicking the clock again this morning has had all threads since then sorted properly.

Perhaps I'll wait until *tomorrow* morning to see if it does it again without logging out....just clicking the X to close the window.

                  Hi LindaWhit,

I'm suggesting that you log out of CH right now. Then log back in, and see if the problems are persisting. It's possible that simply logging out and logging back in will fix things.

                  1. re: Dave MP

Dave, I understand, but I haven't had an issue since this morning's reset. So the "fixing" will be invisible to me - at least for today. Right?

I guess I want to QC it to see if this is an issue with just clicking the X to close the window. Yup, I know. I'm being stubborn by waiting until tomorrow. I know.....I can be that way. :-)

                    1. re: Dave MP

OK, when I came into work this a.m., all threads opened up in their proper order, without having done anything other than clicking the X in the upper right-hand corner of the window.

Now - I *do* run CCleaner every Friday to clear the cache. It also removes cookies, which requires re-logging into all websites I'm usually on (including CH). So it'll be interesting to see if this starts up again on Monday.

                2. Well, it was fine all weekend on my laptop.

The first thread I opened this morning on my work (after running CCleaner on Friday evening to clear cache - as I've done EVERY Friday for the past couple of years), and when I opened the Tipping thread below, it was showing most recent posts at the top.

                  So things aren't "sticking".

Sorry to say, I'm experiencing the same issue. The clock function is not sticking. A comment I just made landed on the top and when I returned to the thread to read someone else's comment mine was laying in the wrong order and the new comment was on top. When I clicked the clock the layout realigned properly but I am sure this isn't what Engineering has in mind-to hit the clock each time you're at a thread to read a comment in the right layout.

                    1. re: HillJ

Well, I *do* know the initial save on a post does put it at the top.

HOWEVER....once you refresh the page, it should fall to its proper place within the hierarchy of the thread. Doesn't sound like your post did that (nor did the new post you were reading).

                      1. re: LindaWhit

No neither did until I hit the clock again. Making that two hits on the clock in order for the thread to read as intended.

                    2. re: LindaWhit

                      Hi LindaWhit.

So the short answer is, if you clear your cookies (as with CCleaner), your settings for the order you view replies in (newest first or oldest first) will be lost, and you'll have to click the Clock button again to reset your preference.

The reason this is a new occurrence is because last week we released a change that uses cookies to make your sort order "stick" rather than using the preference you select when you're logged in. The reason we made this change is so that your choice will stick whether you are logged in or not.

Apologies for any confusion this has caused. We're investigating a fix that will allow the sort order to remain persistent with or without a cookie. But until then, if you clear the cookies in your browser (or if the settings in your browser automatically clear the cookies when you close out), then you will have to re-click the Clock button to return to your preferred sort order.

                      1. re: DeborahL

So there are really that many Hounds who read without logging in so they then have to log in if they want to reply to a certain thread? Seems a bit backwards.

Having it stick with being logged in makes more sense - at least to me. I hope a fix can be figured out.

                    3. Just a tag-on FYI to TPTB - in addition to having to hit the clock every Monday when I come into work after running CCleaner so the posts show up in oldest first order, I *cannot* click an already read post to expand it to see what is was that someone is replying to.

That *only* works after the entire thread has been read, I hit F5 to refresh (ensuring that all posts are now collapsed), and then searching for that post and clicking it to expand it.

So the "expand" function seems to go away upon clearing cookies as well.
