La Carnita, Playa Cabana and Playa Cabana Cantina

  • prima Mar 20, 2013 09:55 AM

I haven't been to any of them. Could you list your top 3 tacos from each place, and mention any of your pros & cons?

Also, is the food at the Playa Cabana Cantina in the Junction as good as the food at the original Playa Cabana on Dupont?

TIA.

  1. I've only been to Playa Cabana Cantina and that only once, for a take-out (but eaten very soon after ordering) order of Carnitas Tacos.

They were okayish, and I'm not opposed to trying the place again since there are more interesting things on the menu, but Rebozos makes better carnitas (and for that matter, so do I). I don't know if the fact that I ordered kind of between lunch and dinner had an effect -- it's possible that the carnitas weren't really fully ready yet, as they needed more time to cook the liquid out and develop a bit of crust.

      Thanks, Jacquilynne. :-)

    2. I haven't been to Playcabana on Dunas - just the other two - I think they're pretty similar - enjoyed both places. The one thing I'd say - I prefer the la carnita/grand electric style of ordering one taco at a time i.e. you can order a fish taco, then a spicy chicken taco. At playcabana on dupont - if you make an order, it's one big plate that comes with three tacos per order, so you can't try to the different tacos as easily. It's still a fun place, and a great addition to the neighborhood - but it's not the best format for trying different tacos.

        thanks, andyb99!

      2. I haven't been to either Playa Cabana, but I will say that I like the one-taco orders at La Carnita, and LOVE LOVE LOVE the non-taco options (ceviche, guac, churros and paletas especially). I like the hip hop and loud vibe myself, but not everyone does. The Cod and Beef Cheek tacos are pretty much the consistent faves in my circles.

            thanks, ladies.

        2. Out of the 3 places that you're asking about, I've only been to Playa Cabana on Dupont, and my favourite tacos from there are the Crispy Chicken Tinga Tacos. I know this is sacrilege, but I think that the Crispy Chicken Tinga Tacos from Play Cabana are even better than the chicken tacos from Grand Electric....shhhh!!

Good to know... I still haven't been to GE, and it's unlikely I'll visit in the near future. The thoughts of line-ups and post-taco tinnitus have kept me away.

it was an hour lineup at LC last Friday. Recommend the avocado mango salad (very yummy) and ear plugs (since I know you're not a fan of loud music or chatter ;)

              1. re: prima

Prima, if you really want to try GE, go @ lunchtime. There are absolutely no lineups @ lunch, and the music level is pretty reasonable as well.

                  thanks, fickle & kwass!

            2. Only been to the Dundas location of Playa Cabana. Very loud, and people are crammed everywhere, but the food and service make up somewhat. The grilled octopus tacos are extremely well made. I would suggest asking for some kick to it. My first time, they simply brought a bottle of Cholula. Second time, two different salsas, one from what may have been scotch bonnets, and the other cascabels. Whole other dimenson.

              2. Apparently, Playa Cabana is planning on opening a 3rd location. Here's the link:
