Gloria's for Salvadoran/Tex-Mex/Mex-Mex/Salsa Dancing - Midtown

  • 1

Only Son launched himself from his bedroom to a new life in mid-town and we went to check out the bachelor pad today. After a brief tour, OS suggested we walk to Gloria's restaurant, an 8 month old place attached to Bar Munich on Louisiana St. A few blocks later, we enjoyed a pleasant dinner with OS and his GF at this place that has Salvadoran food, Tex-Mex and Mex-Mex on the menu, and reverts to a Salsa Dance floor late at night when they move all the tables out of a large room with a raised band stand and which apparently gets quite crazy in those hours. OS and GF shared fajitas and I had Carne de Res Asada Salvatex, steak with one cheese enchilada. DH had Camarones al Mojo de Ajo. My steak was cooked to order- medium rare- and everyone enjoyed the meal. Really the one thing we all liked most was the fresh salsa and black bean dip served gratis prior to the meal with chips. Walking back to the bachelor pad to collect our car at 7:30 p.m. felt very cosmopolitan, in this part of the city that is still coming into its own identity. Foot traffic is still hazardous as commuters leaving downtown are annoyed by pedestrians crossing in this constantly changing and heavily trafficked area. Perhaps it was my apron strings that caused me to caution OS and GF repeatedly to "look out!" on our foot journey that also caused our server to call me "mami" and "mamita" several times while referring to DH as "sir." Or maybe it is a term of endearment in El Salvador. A great time we had. Bitter-sweet, in fact.

  1. That certainly sounds very different from any Salvadoran restaurant I've been to. I see some very interesting dishes on the menu.
