Café Chloe is one of the few places I've been recently that hit a total home run. Every single dish my wife and I ordered was a winner. The white gazpacho was all about almonds and subtle flavors, totally unlike the red tomato-based gazpacho usually encountered in the U.S.A. My wife and I agreed that the thin, crisp, tender, and tasty pommes frites were among the best we'd ever had. They came with three dipping sauces including a truly wonderful and intensely flavored watercress sauce. My wife ordered the steak tartine with gorgonzola mousse and cipollini onions rare, and the steak came rare, with big flavor and a perfect char accent. My macaroni gratin with pancetta had a wonderfully balanced combination of gruyere, fontina, and white cheddar cheeses with a hint of gorgonzola that provided just the right grace note without overwhelming the other cheeses. A pot de creme combined a silky smooth texture with a bold bittersweet chocolate flavor, accompanied by some fabulous Guinettes cherries marinated in brandy and kirsch (imported from Sarlat, France). The bread pudding was likewise a combination of perfect texture (not too dry and bready, not too moist and gooey) and a wonderful balance of orange and chocolate flavors. The young chef, Katie Grebow, is turning out not just good, but great, food. She has the stuff. I can’t recommend Café Chloe highly enough.

I love this place - it's all over my blog. I do think the food is a little rich though, and they can't really accommodate large groups. Other than that, it's probably about my favorite place to go in SD.

Just had another fabu lunch here. A great café , and exception to the common dilemma that SD restaurants seem to posses. This is a "real" place, no pretensions, it's to the point. No gimmicks, no drama, no attitude. It's very cozy, good vibe and very NY café. High quality food and well priced menu. Thank you Café Chloe for getting it spot on!

For me, the best part is, it's 2 blocks away, and that puts the cherry on top.

Definitely Cafe Chloe. Bleu Boheme is good, but Cafe Chloe is better, IMO.

Another vote for Cafe Chloe - unless you need a table with a lot of space, in which case you might be a little cramped. They have that booth up in the back though if you're meeting with several people. They only take res. for over 6.

Alice makes an excellent point regarding space limitations; tight quarters at Chloe. Food wise, while I like Blue Boheme, I'd put Chloe ahead of it.

As an alternate suggestion, try Ave 5.

I'm thinking about going to Cafe Chloe for a birthday dinner next week, but I just realized that they don't take reservations. Do you think we'd have to wait as a party of 4 on a weeknight around 7:30?

Most likely. We eat there quite often and see even during the week parties of 4 waiting around that time. You might call them and ask if you can make a reservation for their one larger table even though you have not a party of 5 whihc is there cut off for reservations for that table. It might work during the week.
