Kuala Lumpur - Spicy South Indian fare at Steven's Corner, OUG

  • 0

Steven's Corner, a South Indian eatery which started as a streetside stall in the middle-class Overseas Union Garden suburb back in 1977, but proved so popular that it grew into a 3 outlet-chain, has always piqued my curiousity. In the past decades when I'm in Singapore but made rare, occasional visits to Kuala Lumpur, my local KL-lite friends would invariably drop the name "Steven's Corner" each time someone mentioned about "mamak stall".

In KL, a "mamak stall" usually refers to a South Indian eatery which opens 24-hours, and Malaysian late-night clubbers and other denizens of the night invariably make a bee-line for one of these places if they want a glass of sweet, hot "pulled tea" or "teh tarik" in Malaysian-speak. And Steven's Corner is up there amongst the best of them, if not actually *the* best.

However, controversy exploded in late 2010 involving restaurateur-proprietor, Steven aka Sathisilan (http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1517566...).

So, when I moved to KL in early 2011 on a job posting, *none* of my KL colleagues would even deign to bring me anywhere near Steven's Corner. It's really hard to get rid of bad vibes

Anyhoo, I finally managed to get 3 KL-lites to go to Steven's Corner for lunch today. It was fairly empty at lunch-time, with its massive spread of gleaming tables and chairs unoccupied.

The spread of dishes at the hot food counter looked good. We selected:
- Dry chicken curry
- Dry mutton curry
- Potato-pea-cauliflower patties
- Crisp-fried bittergourd
- Stir-fried spinach and dhal lentils
- Stir-fried cabbage
- Okra and tofu puffs curry
- A rather watery but tasty yellow lentil gravy

The curried dishes were invariable spicy, but very tasty. The vegetables were all cooked till fork-tender, very soft - a characteristic of South Indian or "mamak" cooking in KL. I liked the food here - piquant, and very tasty. So, there is a good reason why Steven's Corner was well-regarded for its food all this while.
