Top Chef Canada, Season 3, Episode 1

I don't have the energy to do a recap a la LindaWhit so I'll be brief.

Quickfire: Skills relay. Three teams. Shuck oysters, prep mirepoix, segment lemons, and prep and tie a beef tenderloin. Red team wins.

Elimination: Make a dish inspired by the first dish that made you want to be a chef. Chuck Hughes is guest judge.

On the top: Matthew, Daniel and Rebecca.
On the bottom: Frederick, Chris C. and Kayla.

The winner is Matthew and Frederick goes home.

First impressions: Jonathan seems to be pretty arrogant. I hope he lives up to it, though his first offering didn't live up to his big talk. Chris C. seems out of his depth. Let's hope it was just first-time nerves. Caity seems to have an attitude.
Loved the top three. Impressed with Rebecca's deconstructed lemon meringue. I'm a sucker for an English accent so I love Daniel. Matthew is gorgeous, he can cook and he works with Rob Feenie - a win-win-win for me.

Looking forward to seeing what Rory has to offer. I've been to George Restaurant a few times and the food is great. I hope he performs up to that level. Also wondering if Kayla can get it together for the next challenge. The judges enjoyed her fried chicken. She might make great food if she can pull herself together.

Can't wait for the next episode!

  1. gah poor fred! don't let this mislead you away from his restaurant in montreal dear tourists!

    1. Daniel comes off as quite charming and funny, hope he sticks around. Chris C. looks so familiar - was there someone really similar to him on TC Canada before? His dish looked crazy.

The girl who wants to marry Lisa - Kayla? - I hope she can pull it together. Sucks when nerves and poor timing get in the way. Her chicken looked delicious.

      1. The best line of the episode goes to Chuck Hughes "This is like what my Mom used to cook on Tuesday night, and my Mom is not on Top Chef".

        1. I felt very embarrassed for Chris C. I always root for the fellow Newfie but his nervousness was hard to watch.

No favourites yet. I can't remember their names just yet. I usually get attached to the Calgarians since I live here and can eat at their restaurants (even though I liked Xavier but never went to eat at Muse...) I have plans to check out at Market (Geoff Roger's new restaurant) next week. I thought he came off well in episode 1.

          1. Thanks for the heads up the new season has started.
