Papa falaoa at McGarden [ Excelsior, San Francisco ]

  • 0

McGarden, a fairly new Chinese bakery on Mission St in the Excelsior, had a sign stating, "we now have papafalaoa." With even google being pretty useless for "papa falaoa," I stopped in.

The owner told me that a Hawaiian friend taught him how to make these. It's a giant pan-loaf frenchbread that costs $3.00. The top, which mushrooms out of the pan like crazy, tastes like your standard Safeway french roll or banh mi bread. At the center of the loaf, the mushroomed top is 8" wide, which would make for some enormous toast. I've no idea what you're supposed to do with this, but if you need a giant loaf of white flour bread for some reason, here's where to get it.

The rest of their stuff doesn't seem all that different from the other Chinese bakeries along Mission.
