Tai Wong In Chinatown Gone But Ho Ho Fu is Still Around
Just noticed that Tai Wong at 711½ N. New High is gone. While not particularly chowish, or even yelpish (total of one Yelp review) I think it's significant because this restaurant and its predecessors at the same location (I was never sure if there were actual ownership changes or merely name changes) had provided dirt cheap and decent dim sum and steam tray food for the denizens of Chinatown, particularly those on fixed income, for over 15 years. (Think Yum Cha Cafe on a small scale.) Fortunately, Ho Ho Fu on Ord Street seems to be going strong in the same category. $1.38 dim sum is pretty good and probably the best bargain in Chinatown. And you can sit at the giant communal table with the old timers if you want.
