Recent visits to the White Dog UC?

Bacchus101 Mar 16, 2013 06:38 AM

With a show nearby, we made a reservation for a UC dinner. We would love to hear your thoughts, as it has been a long while since last we were there and that visit was not good. How was it at your last visit? Thanks.

Since you asked... I just had brunch there and honestly the food was not very good and, given that and the mediocre service with several gaffes, very expensive. They are trying but homemade scrapple and corned beef were poor efforts, $13 omelettes served without toast or potato, and the toast offered was a very dense, dry, and unflavorful loaf unsuitable for toast IMO (if you're lucky enough to try it... a member of our party didn't have the foresight to order toast with his omelette and though he asked when the dish was delivered, it never arrived). Also the food is served on strange, curved plates and tiny slates that are difficult to eat off of. On the plus side, the space is very nice, the desserts were good, and the butter was very good quality.

Maybe it's better for dinner but I won't be going back, much better experiences to be had at this price point IMO.

Thanks for your observations. A bit late for my purpose and perhaps that is a good thing as your comment would have, most likely, had me concerned enough to go elsewhere. As it was, on our specific visit, we were more than pleased as others have noted here. Inconsistency in food and service is a problem which will need to be overcome if the White Dog is to regain its past glory. Interestingly it is brunch where I had noticed their previously precipitous decline.

And their bar menu is excellent too.

Base on last evenings visit the White Dog in University City is "Back". All items ordered were excellent and the service, our server, was the most pleasant mellow fellow serving
        with consideration and skill.

That's good to hear. Do you know who the chef is now?

To my knowledge CW has it right. I did observe the food being served and the general reactions to it of those in our immediate area and all seemed pleased and engage with their food. After a few "not good visits" a year ago I am reluctant to use a broad brush to paint the current situation, however it did look and taste encouraging.
