I know the forsythia is not quite blooming yet but I'm craving Shad Roe. Does anyone know where I can get some?

Are you looking for restaurants or seafood markets?

For restaurants I can't help you, but pretty much any & every supermarket here in VA with a seafood department is carrying Shad Roe at the moment. I've seen it at Wegmans (bought some from there just a couple of weeks ago - FABULOUS!); also try Safeway, Giant, Harris Teeter, & independent seafood markets.

It can be hit or miss, because markets don't usually order a lot at one time due to Shad Roe's extreme perishability.

Rumor has it they are serving it at Mintwood Place. Equinox usually has a shad item on the menu when it's in season...call first to find out.

I've seen Shad Roe advertised at the Annapolis Seafood Market's roadside sign on Forest Drive in Annapolis recently (http://www.aircrabusa.com/index.aspx). Not sure if you are looking inside the DC limits or not, as this might be a bit out of your way.

I've never had Shad Roe, how is it best prepared/cooked/eaten etc? Sounds like there are a few fans ...

I like cooking it as simply as possible - just sauteed in an obscene amount of butter with some fresh lemon juice squeezed over it.

Some folks like it with bacon, onions, garlic, etc., etc., but for me - assuming the Shad Roe is truly fresh - that's just gilding the lily.

Mintwood has it on their menu at the moment.

I had it last weekend at the Rappahannock Oyster Bar in Union Market. Not the best rendition, but far from the worst. I would order it again if it was still on the menu.
Here is a fairly comprehensive list: http://dc.eater.com/archives/2013/03/...

Crisfield Seafood Restaurant in Silver Spring was offering it recently.

The Giant in Hampden had shad roe sets the other day, I would call them.
