Cheap eats?

I'm on a low budget but I would still like to eat in restaurants (or bring stuff home.) I thought I would ask for cheap eat recommendations. I'm in Northern NJ -- Essex county but please feel free to share your recommendations from all over.

Your request is too general-- need more specifics. Probably a couple hundred restaurants meet your criteria.

      1. re: lemarais

I was specifically leaving it general so people could have the freedom to put whatever choices they wanted.

I guess I'm mostly interested in finding out cool ethnic choices as opposed to a pizza joint -- but if the pizza is great I wouldn't mind finding out about that.

    2. Cool Ethnic:

      Simply Vietnamese, Tenafly

      Pancho's New Milford.

      Great pizza:

      A Mano, Ridgewood.

      1. So, where'd you end up? Did you stick to Essex County?

I ended up bringing home food from El Centro Americano in West Orange. I got a Pupusas de Chicarron (Pork Pupusa) -- I think it was $2. and another pupusa con todo (also $2. - I think - I will check the menu when I get home to update prices. For my main I got the Arroz Con Pollo ($9) a very large portion of rice with shredded chicken, carrots and peas in it. Ok - that description doesn't do it justice. For dessert I got a piece of flan. It was so creamy -- it must have had cream cheese in it. really good!

        2. Selenita in Pompton Lakes. http://selenitarestaurant.com/

You are so right!!! I didn't say it, but I was thinking it, only because it's not in Essex County.

Very good recommendation! I like the place.

            1. re: ELA

Oh thank you, ELA and Sdenred! I've walked past Selenita's a zillion times and wondered ... it always seems to have added a new decoration or blackboard, or more hats or more sparkles every time i see it. And that made me think it might be prospering. I'll have to haul out a couple of friends for a little party!

or maybe just swing by and get something to go...

              1. re: jiffypop

You're welcome...Selenita's is a small, no frills authentic Mexican place in downtown Pompton Lakes. Family owned and operated. They do have some of the "Americanized" offerings on the menu, but they also have much of the real, authentic offerings as well. They have a good local following and it's popular with people from Pompton Lakes and the nearby area/towns, but there are also people who drive to go there. Bottom line -- good food!

Some people have an "attitude" about what's "authentic" -- and they pick apart a menu, or look to either their own "rigid' interpretation, or whatever -- and that's fine. Personally, if I recommend a place, my goal and hope is that you enjoy it. Try Selenita's -- it's good Mexican food, from people who take pride in their cooking, preparation, etc.

Try it -- thanks to Sdenred for a very good recommendation!

                1. re: ELA

thanks! I used to go across the street when it was run by a Dominican family. Oh my. they made a cuban sandwich that would make you cry - it was sooooo good. but they closed. And since then, I've just walked past Serenitas. I checked out the menu - have you had the barbacoa [the goat?]. My eyes are on the al Pastor and the carnitas. Authenticity?? HAHAHA!!!! some people would say my grandmother's red sauce from Colliano isn't authentic because it didn't come from ROME.

Maybe this weekend - a nice treat.

            2. re: Sdenred

A trip might be in order.

            3. If you're in Bergen, Pancho's in New Milford rivals Selenita's any day of the week...

I also just remembered Burnet BBQ, a Portuguese takeout with some really great and authentic dishes. Cheap. A few locations in Union & Essex. Great BBQ chicken as well.

I haven't been to Pancho's for a few years, but I remember it being ok Tex-Mex fare. Not really the same as Selenita.

                1. re: lemarais

Burnet BBQ isn't far from where I work. I'm going to have to check them out. Thanks for the recommendation.

                2. Believe me -- I do travel to eat. That being said, I thought I would give some recommendations of my own.

For ramen I go to Santouka at Mitsuwa in Edgewater. I combine it with a shopping trip.

For chinese: Chengdu 1 in Cedar Grove.

For dimsum: either Qin Dynasty in Parsippany or Dim Sum Dynasty in Ridgewood.

For cheap Chinese food (although not a restaurant) I get food from the counter at Kam Man Foods on Rt 10 in East Hanover.
