Road Food Recommendations: NC I-40 & 1-77 intersection. Alt to Keaton's

I've been reading about Keaton's for a while now, and recently my son moved to the NC area. We will be visiting him in a couple of weeks and I wanted to stop there on they way.

Unfortunately Keaton's closes for lunch at 2 PM and I don't know if the timing is going to work out. We are driving down from New York and are not sure what time we'll be there.

Are there any other good lunch spots in the general vicinity. We'll be coming down I-77 and not afraid to venture from the highway for a worthwhile destination.

Surry County diner is one I picked up on Chow. Great dive. $10.00 Prime Rib Friday night.

In Huntersville look up Moma Mia II in downtown for diner. White cloth Italian food.

Not sure what you're looking for since you mentioned Keaton's (which is outstanding), but for a great hot dog, try Jay Bee's in Statesville. Landmark institution there and the dogs aren't bad.

I'm looking for exactly what you just gave me: recommendations for interesting lunch stops in the area.

The reason I'm looking for recommendations besides Keaton's is because of timing. I'm not sure we'll be in the area before they close for lunch at 2 PM.

Where are you going exactly? Coming down I-77 from the north? Continuing down I-77, or turning onto I-40?

Coming down 1-77 from the north heading to Huntersville. I was planning on getting off at I-40 for Keaton's. I don't need to get off at I-40 but not opposed to it to find a good lunch spot.

There's not much in the vicinity of I-77 and I-40, unfortunately. If you're not in a huge hurry you might want to to stop at Shelton Vineyards, right off I-77 about an hour or so before you get to I-40. They have a very nice restaurant, and if you're so inclined, some good wine. You could do a tasting, and/or pick up a botle to share with your son during your visit.

Also, in the town of Elkin, a little further down I-77 is a very good restaurant called Twenty One and Main. They are open for lunch and dinner, but may close in between, so timing may be an issue for you.

Both of these are more upscale than Keaton's, so they may not appeal.
