Imagine that! Bakery LIED about sugar, fat in its products

A federal judge issued a consent decree shutting down the Butterfly Bakery in Clifton, NJ after the FDA charged that the bakery had been putting sugar in products it advertised as sugar-free. It had previously been warned by the FDA to stop mislabeling its products. Tests showed the firm’s No-Sugar Added Blueberry Muffins contained more than twice the fat listed on nutrition labels. Sugar-Free Double Chocolate Chip Muffins, contained about 444 percent more saturated fat than listed on the product label. “Laboratory analysis showed that foods labeled as ‘sugar free’ contained sugar, and that certain products contained as much as three times the amount of labeled/declared sugar, two times the amount of labeled/declared fat and two times the amount of labeled/declared saturated fat,” FDA officials said in a press release.

If it is too good to be true....

And it turns out that the State of Florida went after this same bakery in 2001. Brenda Isaac, owner of the Butterfly Bakery in New Jersey, said she spent almost $25,000 on additional lab tests and new labels after hearing from the state. She said it is vital to her reputation in the diet foods niche to have credibility. Once she heard from Florida, she said, she immediately took steps to fix the labels. Uh huh. Sure.

Seinfeld can almost always be relied on for relevant quotes!

There's a similar but worse situation in my neck of the woods right now, where a McDonalds lied about serving halal meat and there's some dispute about whether the punishment is fitting--the money goes to organizations and not the people who unwittingly ate the non-halal food

What kills me is the comments on some boards from people who think that it's OK for the McD's to lie because it's to Muslims.
