Paris and Normandy

We will be in Paris for 6-7 days, staying in the 17th, not far from the Arc de Triomphe, then 3-4 days in Normandy, statying outside Bayeux with a car. Any recommendations for places to dine in these locals? We would prefer local food, "mid priced" but with a few "splurges". This is in May and is our first trip to France.

      In fact I'm not sure what mid price would be for Paris/Normandy, but I guess I mean we don't have to go to the top (that is very expensive) places. On the other hand we don't mind spending a little more for a memorable dining experience once in a while.

        How much do you usually spend when eating out in your area ? $50 per person ? more ? less ? includes wines/alcohol ?

          Last night we ate out and had very good 3 course dinners for $76 for two, including tip and tax, but no alcohol. I would call that "mid price" for most places. That is a little more than we usually spend, but what I would expect to pay here (Detroit) for that level of dining.

            Jim - mid price in Paris is probably €60 ($78) a head and up for dinner i.e. Saturne's dinner menu is €60, L'ami jean mid price menu is €55. Wine, bottled water and coffee are extra.

              The Paris restaurant scene has such breadth and depth that you can easily eat well for 75€ a couple (which in Paris is just a slight notch above dead cheap). After all, there are 80 Michelin Bib Gourmands (a designation for quality restaurants serving a 3-course meal for under 35€) in Paris. Not an infallible list by any means and there are some whose quality is very arguable. But at least a good start for a first-timer on a budget. And lots of other good-value restaurants that have slipped through the Michelin Bib filter or a few euros above the 35€ ceiling.

              A big thumbs up for Laidback's suggestion of Caius. Great place. And the entire menu is a standard 42€ with no supplements. A lot of seemingly affordable restaurants have so many supplements for this or that item that their cheap prix fixe seems almost a bait-n-switch. So Caius' no-supplement policy is quite endearing.

              A few pointers for keeping the tab down in most restaurants when going à la carte: no non-wine apéritifs, wine by the glass, no bottled water, shared dessert, no digestifs, and coffee at a nearby café.

                Right and as Laidback says, Zinc Caius is even a better bargain.

      2. Wwe have been to Caius on Rue Armaille several times and never been disappointed. They have a pocket size offshoot just down the same street that is less expensive and not bad for the price, called Zinc Caius. They are less than 500 yds. from the A. de T.

        1. Best restaurant in Bayeux, hands down , is Le P'tit Resto. Wonderful, innovative food, young dedicated chef. Small place, reservations essential.

          Also, another good choice is a wine bar/restaurant, Le Volet Qui Penche. Outstanding food at this place.

          I recommend you skip the standard tourist places, La Rapiere, Le Pommier, etc.

          Don't miss a visit to Livarot, there is a cheese factory tour with all 3 of the local cheeses: Livarot, Pont L'Eveque, and Camembert.

            Just in case JM11 is not aware, France has 5 holidays in May: 1-8-9-19-20. Some might affect restaurant days of operation; possibly also the cheese factory tour (sounds great though...wish I were planning a trip there).

              Thanks for the tip, but I discovered the 19/20th Holiday and it it is causing us to redo our arrangements to Normandy and days in Paris.

            2. May is a great time to be a French person- there are usually only 11 working days!!

              1. If you have never been, I would recommend a day trip to Mont Ste. Michel. Not to go is like never going to the Louvre because of the lines. False economy of time. Along the way, you can make a stop at the town of Villedieu and stock up on all things co pper. It has been the copper fabrication center for centuries.

                While in the area, look for signs advertising local lamb. A specialty as they have the sea salt in their blood. The mutton is even more distinctive.

                There is also the tradition of a Normand Hole in the middle of the meal. In order to make room for the second half, a large shot of the local apple brandy, Calvados, is imbibed. Helps to over come the soporific and filling tendencies of all the marvellous creams, butters, and cheeses within the meal.
