Hi,
I'm looking for dinner in the white house area for my family (some of whom have never visited DC before).
There will be 8 of us, ranging in age from 23 to 78. Looking for a relatively casual meal, coming in under $30pp (excluding tax/tip/alcohol).

Italian or American cuisine would probably be ideal.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

  1. Old Ebbit Grill sounds like the perfect option for you.

    1. Down the block from the White House is Old Ebbitt Grill. I've had a lot of luck with bigger family dinners there and it's in your price range. I've always felt it's got that very classic, old-school, all-American D.C. feel that would be cool for District first timers.

Edit: Ah, ipsedixit beat me! Darn slow internet. Well, I second Old Ebbitt!

      1. 3 votes for Old Ebbitts. The food and service are both great. Burgers are outstanding & fantastic oysters on half shell.

Well, let's not get carried away.

The food at Old Ebbit Grill is fine, maybe even pretty good, but "great" and "outstanding"? No dice.

Old Ebbit Grill is a good fit for the OP's criteria -- beyond that, there's nothing intrinsically good about the place beyond tradition and as a tourist's destination.

yes. it's not a superlative place, but fits the criteria posed to a 'T', the 'kids' won't be excited and the seniors won't be scared. well-executed is the best term.

and I gotta say the management team really does train the staff well.

Personally these days I prefer The Hamilton to Old Ebbitt. It's owned by the same people but I think the food is better.

As I've posted before, I like the Old Ebbitt's raw bar happy hour. Clyde's in Gallery Place has the same deal, and that's in walking distance from work for me. That's where I usually go when I want oysters after work.

          2. You should go to The Hamilton. There is a little bit of something for everything and you likely can stay within your price range. Make a reservation for a party that large though.
