Does anyone remember 10 cent wing night at Leggetts?

corvette johnny Feb 27, 2013 01:36 PM

Those were the days! They were not the greatest but at ten cents, you couldn't beat them.

MGZ, anything going on there nowadays? I realize its not a fine dining place but those Monday night specials were unreal.

I remember ordering a 200 piece order with quite a few buddies after a LONG day of fishing. For those wondering, they came in two giants bus buckets (hopefully thoroughly washed LOL)

Does anyone offer anything remotely similar on monday nights anymore? I realize football season is far away but I just had some wings and they brought back some good memories. And yes, I know they won't be ten cents anymore with the price wings now but I'm just wondering if there are any good wing specials around central NJ.

Cheers,

Johnny

The Brunswick Grove has 25 cent wings on Tuesdays. I am not a big fan of them, as they are on the small side, but they are tasty. I know a number of people who have not missed a Tuesday night in years. I like some of the other Grove nights, such as Mexican night, which I think might be Wednesdays, when they have various Mexican type items for $2 or #.

I do remember Leggett's having offered wing specials, at least for football games, over the years. I never really spent too much time there during the summer months, except maybe to see a band or something, so I'm not sure about any kind of continuing offer. (I do remember being a very big fan of the five or ten cents wing specials that seemed pretty commonplace at Shore bars. The cost of wings seems to have outstripped inflation as a twenty-five cents is the minimum price now.)

Leggett's was petty banged up by the Storm. Cleaning and rebuilding has been going on since as soon as they could get in to begin. Some of the bartenders have been getting "guest" slots at other local bars to try and help them hang on. I have heard, however, that Leggett's will be open by April 1st.

I just learned that Leggett's is actually reopening tomorrow at Noon. If you want to see the vast majority* of the colorful drunks in this town, as well as help support what is a bit of a local institution, stop in for a pop or two. Looks like fun!

*I won't be able to make it.

The Pour House on Shewsbury Ave, Tinton Falls does $. 50 wings for their happy hour 4-7pm. They are bbq not in a typical buffalo sauce however they are grilled behind the bar and are the full wing and drumstick....very nice size and meaty.

I generally get them and the roasted clams.....that's good happy hour eats right there!!

I believe the same is in place at their sister restaurants (Main St. in particular). I know that this was a regular 'staple' whenever I ate at the bar (having the roasted clams & wings at that number) - haven't been there in over a year though I still think they're offering.

Speaking of bargains, what was the price a bucket of steamers at the Inlet cafe back in the day? It was some ridiculous number which one can only dream about as the tag in the freezer these days say $4.99/lb. Remember the days you could go to your fish monger and get them 3 lbs for a dollar?

I always liked the "behind the bar" grilled clams at places like The Pour House, Frankie's, Harpoon Willie's, etc.* Problem is, they always lead to another beer and a burger.

            * The Broadway in Point Pleasant is a less known one.

Harpoon Willies I haven't been in that place in over 10 years. I can't believe what happened to Peterson's on the other side of the water.......what is it River Rock?

I was all set to go to Leggett's tomorrow until I read your non-participation disclosure. The draw of colorful drunks isn't enough to bring me down there now. Maybe next time.

First, Harpoon Willie's was overhauled a couple years ago - pretty cool now. Try the bar for clams and burgers. Think Barnacle Bills on the Manasquan River.

                Second, River Rock??? I agree.

Third, I'm much too pretty to be one of the more colorful drunks in this town. Nevertheless, since I started drinking at Leggett's three days before I graduated from RBC, I may try and stop by after work to celebrate the phoenix factor.

Jack's in Long Branch does 30c wings for happy hour! Plus 1$ Bud/Bud light!

I remember Monday Night Football at the Hiedelberg in Passaic where they came out at half time with free wings or pizza !! Great times , it's been years since I went out on a Monday.

Mgz, it is good to hear they are finally getting back to business. I hope the community shows them some huge support.

How about the old Park Ave? Does anyone remember that place? That was on the Deal Lake (in allenhurst I believe)

That place was nuts! They had ten cent wings, 2 dollar pizzas and nachos, and dollar pints on sunday for football. You literally had to be there when it opened at 11 to get a seat. There would be a line of dudes waiting to get in. Man, those were the days.

I have to get over the pour house. I haven't been there in probably 2 years. I could definitely get into some clams, followed by a cheddar burger.

I'll be honest, there is a weird, positive vibe in town today about the Leggett's reopening. Some return to normalcy for many has created some local excitement.

Apparently, the excitement is not just local. Someone has organized rotating buses from Hoboken to Leggett's every three hours or so today. The first group is scheduled to arrive at 11:30 this morning so as to be sure to be able to get in when the doors open at Noon.

                    Symbolic victories . . . .

Hoboken? Wow that is pretty impressive. It is good to see them get back on their feet. They should roll back the clock and do some ten cents wings LOL
