VPE Rated Khong River 4 Stars in Sobe

Can you say overrated? I knew you could. It is good but not better than, or even as good as, Bazaar or even Barceloneta and a quite a few other places I can mention. I think she lost her mind...

  1. She robbed Bazaar of a half star for sure. Khong is very good regardless of stars...

      There is nothing wrong with Khong and it is good honest food, but nothing I ate there compels me to return. I feel the same about Yardbird and rank them equally.

      I would rather go to many restaurants in sobe before Khong. No way should it be the highest rated restaurant.

        Disagree. Khong is 2/4 star at most. Food is heavy on sweet some dishes, heavy on spice others, lots of over-saucing. Skill in the kitchen is weak as all of my 4 visits have had overcooked proteins (prawns, chicken, whole hog snapper was most disappointing and completely inedible). Some dishes are enjoyable like the papaya salad, vegetable salad, chiang rai sausage, and jerky. I also like their sticky rice. Boat noodle broth is good but meatballs in the broth are awful. This is one of those places I'll go to if others are in charge of choosing but I would not choose to go myself.

          Having eaten at Momi for the first time now (3 star review not by VPE). I am going to quote espn and just say C'mon Man.

          If Khong is 4 stars Momi is 54 stars.

            MOMI is great. My next "tiers of excellence" ranking will have major changes thanks to Momi, Lucali and Macchialina

              Interesting you bring these up together:

              Momi is the Lucali of ramen. Limited menu, awesome execution. I also think the noodles at Momi are every bit as good as the pasta Macchialina.

I ate there opening night and found the dishes to be good but way under spiced compared to what level of heat used in northern Thailand.I had to ask for Thai bird chilies on the side for each of the 3 dishes I tried.Sort of like Thai food that Cuban Americans can handle.I feel no need to rush back.

        1. Maybe it was a combined score of bar + restaurant (in my case it'd be 3 + 1, respectively).
