  1. It looks like a really promising steakhouse option for the area. Per the website, I generally like my meat bone in as well, so I hope they deliver on that. I will be interested to see a menu.

I don't like the 'Urban Steak Bistro' tagline though.

Does raise a good question, though: "Worst restaurant / bar sub-head ever?"

My first thought was "Saint: A Nitery"

    2. It also looks like The Palm *could* open in March at One International Place, as they are doing job interviews in the early part of the month. But perhaps April would be more likely.

Was thinking about them this past weekend. Miss their crab cakes and Monday Salad. Love those crab cakes!!!
        Enjoy,

Sign in the lobby of One IP says the Palm will open in May.

          1. re: mhead

I guess I'll have to wait until May. Although, I had a pretty good Crab cake at McCormick & Schmicks'. Actually, the whole dinner was pretty darn good.
            Totally Enjoyed,

I know. Wishful thinking! I walked by last weekend- kitchen is an empty shell...

I was referring more to April Fool's Day than the inevitable opening delays at any restaurant.

Really? I hadn't heard this. Has anyone else heard anything about Geoffrey's?

            1. re: hiddenboston

The landlord took them to court and landlord won.

            2. re: lime_green

Where did you hear this from? I like this spot, it's a good alternative to Club Cafe.

              1. re: lime_green

I'm sorry to hear this. It was a favorite of mine when it was in Roslindale and walking distance. Good food and good people.

              2. I have been watching construction at the original Panificadora Modelo space in Magoun Square Somerville and there are now huge signs announcing "Modelo Butcher Market" a Brazilian acougue (butcher, market) presumably from the same folks. (This was originally Cara Donna, then under the name Casal but different from the East Cambridge shop, before taking on the Modelo sign and then empty when the bakery moved across the street.)

The fixtures are in at Modelo Butcher Market and they were stocking good yesterday, so opening soon and possibly in March.

I saw a flier for the grand opening of Ma France in East Lexington on the Arlington line -- sounded like catering and market deal.

Also Danny's Deli on Medford near Sycamore posted a more detailed list of their Portuguese groceries, but hard to read from a moving car. It did include fresh cheese, portuguese flour, but that was about as far as I got.

                  1. re: itaunas

Ma France appeared to be open today, many balloons in bleu, blanc et rouge when I drove by. Says cheeses and gourmet deli. Same block as Jackson's Kitchen, the old Carey's Catch space. Will try to stop in soon and report.

                2. Swissbakers in Allston was jumping around noon today, their first day of operation. The raspberry berliners were pleasantly substantial and the ham and swiss croissant was tasty. The surprisingly soft, doughy pretzel baguettes and the crustier braided rolls (available with poppy and sesame seeds as well as plain) were delightful as part of a ploughman's plate for dinner with some pate, cheeses and pickles.

                  1. Gourmet Garden in the Cobb's Corner Plaza, canton should open this month. It took over a very spacious Talbots location. It is going to offer Chinese and Japanese. The buzz around town indicates it should be busy from the get go.

The owners also have similar places in Swampscott and Hingham.

It's on Rt 53 and used to be called Asia C.

                          1. re: jomo9501

Oh, OK thanks. I really disliked Asian C- I found it to be greasy and pretty generic flavor/spice wise. My son thought the sushi was "just ok". Is the new place any better? Any winning dishes to try?

                            1. re: foodieX2

I haven't been to the restaurant, but I want to mention that it is the same owner as Asian C. He just changed the concept to "healthier menu with no MSG and no trans fat in their dishes".

                    2. There is a new vegetarian/vegan restaurant that just opened in newton highlands at the corner of Walnut and Centre Streets, Walnut Grille.

I also noticed a new restaurant, The Farmhouse, that opened in Needham Centre on March 1. It looks like another farm-to-table restaurant.

                      Has anyone tried either restaurant?

That's good to hear. They're on Facebook, so you can see their menu there - it feels a little pricey for Needham (one veggie entree for $16, the others $23-28) but maybe it's worth it...

                      2. maranatha caribbean restaurant has opened on broadway in everett

                        1. According to Grubstreet Boston Chops opens today.

                              And before that, Varese Shoes.

I honestly don't know how a Pinkberry would go over in the North End. The most clueless of the tourists -- and let's face it, that's a high proportion -- would probably fall in line, but everyone else would just shrug and get a gelato across the street.

                              1. re: Jenny Ondioline

I'm sure a Pinkberry in the North end would go over just fine and kill it (just like their other locations), particularly in that prime spot.

I had heard rumblings awhile back of a Grom opening in the Seaport area, but that seems to have died down unfortunately.

                                1. re: Jenny Ondioline

I disagree. The "young professionals" (ugh to that term, but I didn't make it up) in that neighborhood are just as likely to go there as the tourist who has heard of it but doesn't live near one.

                              2. Staniford Cafe has papered over it's windows and doors. Found the place to be a little pricey, but they did make a good tuna salad sandwich (a shockingly rare thing, if you ask me)

Devilham, if you're around Downtown Boston, try the tuna salad at Milk Street Cafe - REALLY good. They don't put in a lot of mayo (if any) & no celery - really doesn't look like much is in it but it has a ton of flavor (must be the brand of tuna they use). I usually get it in a pocket so the bread doesn't compete with the tuna - it's just the delivery system. : )

                                2. Spoke Wine Bar in Somerville should open in the next week or two.

Too bad. Then again, I haven't been in at least a year, because the last few times I went the quality had nosedived. I used to really love it, though.

If you are talking about Boston Chops, I have yet to sample the food. But it doesn't take much to exceed the charms of expensive chain steakhouses like the Capital Grille, in my book.

In its favor, I'll say it is a very handsome redo of the old Banq / Ginger Park space, looking like a cross between Union Bar & Grill next door (tufted black leather, dark wood, lots of banquettes) and Eastern Standard (a long bar running along one wall, soaring ceilings).

Slightly lower prices, mostly prime but some choice steaks (Cap Grille is all prime), an offal-heavy app section, more interesting-looking sides, more bone-in cuts, three prime steak-frites cuts (a nice weeknight option for locals: skirt, flat iron, hanger).

I was hoping for an ESK-style craft cocktail program, but I'm less confident they'll deliver on that, having seen the cocktail list. I have higher hopes for the wine program, as the beverage manager came from L'Espalier.

Cap Grille uses USDA Choice, dry aged.

                                                    1. re: treb

Per its menu, only two of Capital Grille's cuts are dry-aged: sirloin (also served au poivre and coffee crusted) and porterhouse. It appears they do mainly rely on choice; "prime" isn't listed anywhere.

They used to have some select prime items, however those have (quietly) disappeared from the menu. The product gets worse and worse, but they still make a killing.

It's been closed for a couple of months and is now papered over with a sign announcing Primo Roast Beef and Pizza. There's a place of that name in Lynn, so maybe a second location?

I'm in favor. Lose one generic House of Pizza and get a North Shore-style beef joint. There's not a lot of examples of that classic form in the area - I think just Skampa in East Cambridge and Jimbo's in Union Square

                                                                    1. Per the Herald, Sterling's, on the back end of 60 State Street, with a huge-ass patio, opens later this week. Keenan Langlois, ex-Union Bar & Grill, is the chef.

The Glynn Hospitality Group (current roster: The Black Rose, Dillon’s, Jose McIntyre’s, Brownstone, Hurricane O’Reilly’s, Coogan’s, Clerys, Granary Tavern) plans to open a couple more Sterling'ses later on: they're looking at the Seaport (naturally), Back Bay and South End.

I still remember the collection plates that were passed around there from time to time. (And I'll leave it at that.)

Just scratching my head a bit about the relevance and assumptions about the ethnicity of the ownership group.

Interchangeable, dull menus, too. (Granary Tavern seems to be trying a bit harder, but isn't all shamrock-bedecked in the first place.) There's clearly a market for it; I'm just bored to death by these places.

While the menu leaned Persian, which is new for the neighborhood, I fear that with Garlic 'n' Lemons, Boston Kabob Company, and Azama Grill already pretty solidly entrenched, there wasn't really room for one more kebab shop.

The now defunct Townsends in Cleary Sq Hyde Park is finally being replaced by some sort of grill type restaurant(different owner). They're hoping to open before May 1. There's some renovating going on right now. Evidently, the owner of Townsends tied up the liquor lic at that address preventing another lic being transferred there. It was finally resolved.

No opening date, but I imagine this coming up pretty quickly, maybe April.

Nothing fancy, but big and tasty food portions and generous wine pours served up by no-nonsense but friendly bartenders. Decent beers on tap, too. We always got into interesting conversations at the bar that made it tough to leave for the game. Bumma....

Heading up 28 from the large rotary and before Forest St (which goes Fell's Pond and Flynn Rink). It is in the middle of the Middlesex Fells, sort of, but so is 93N at that point. :-) You have probably driven by the location and thought "why would anyone put a restaurant there" (heavily transited area, but few people stop).

Not what I expected re: dim sum. 16 choices with higher price points than dim sum in Malden or Boston. Menu really is more Szechuan/Cantonese with usual (for me boring) Chinese entrees such as General Gau's Chicken. A few Pan Asian selections. We stopped in pre-show a few weeks back and had some apps. Ok tuna tartare, pretty good fried rock shrimp, and some of the most boring fries ever, especially as they were touted as being Parmesan dusted fries with garlic/truffle aioli. No noticeable Parmesan (to the eye or palate), no truffle taste anywhere near them. Just ok fries with garlic mayo. The governor was there with some friends, who also took in the show, but that shouldn't be the highlight of any meal!

Some work going on inside.

So I'm guessing the rumor of a second Area Four outpost in that location is correct.

We've tried to go in for brunch a few weekends lately and there's been a 30+ minute wait and a packed bar - and we just won't wait that long. We used to be regulars at the bar, but now we can never get a seat.

I think it will be just pizza, sandwiches, tap wine and canned beer. A welcome opening to neighborhood with little to offer when it comes to pizza and beer pairings.

Burritos Express on Bedford Street downtown is closed, "seized by order of the Boston trial court." I don't know what this means for its other locations (JP, Hyde Park, Dorchester), but I'm bummed. It was my favorite taqueria in the Fi-Di/DTX zone.
