Winchester Arms Kitchen - anyone been lately?

millygirl Feb 25, 2013 04:04 PM

I may need to be headed there in a couple of days. Just wondering if anybody has been of late, and if so, how was it? Any recommendations?

How was it? I might be going in a couple of weeks for a play, have to decide whether to eat there or not.

          Eat downstairs at Kingyo instead.

I walked by WK last night, after dinner at Kingyo, and a bunch of pseudo-flappers and other "speakeasy" characters were on the way in. Costume party? Bad sign. It's a bar/entertainment venue, not a restaurant, and the locals ( i'm one) do NOT eat OR drink there. No idea why they have "kitchen" in the name. You can read the menu online and it is.... not encouraging.

Kingyo was extraordinary, however, and we only ate off the "specials" which change every two weeks. Amazing garfish/needlefish/sayori and REAL bream/tai sashimi, chawanmushi (last gasp of winter), macha creme brûlée, etc.

Thanks for the rec, we went to Kingyo last night. It was great! The seafood stone bowl with sea urchin sauce was a standout, and the plum wine brought back lots of memories of our trip to Tokyo a couple of months ago.

We also had scotch eggs at the House on Parliament after the play, which were awesome - lovely gamey sausagemeat. Served on a plate with salad though which is certainly not the English way!
