LA Dish of the Month (March 2013) - Voting

ipsedixit Feb 25, 2013 12:58 AM

Here are the candidates for LA Dish of the Month for March 2013.

Everyone is welcome to vote once by writing your choice in ALL CAPS. You can vote even if you didn't participate in the nomination round.

I narrowed the nominations down to the following:

EGGS (egg-centric dishes like Frittata, or Carbonara even, but not pancakes or ice cream for example)

BEAN AND CHEESE BURRITOS

BOLOGNESE

Voting will be open until midnight PST on February 28th.

Thanks again for everyone's participation!

Though likely in vain, I will stand up for BOLOGNESE...

How about we combine eggs and bean and cheese burritos and make March breakfast burrito month?

              Failing that, my vote is:

              BEAN AND CHEESE BURRITOS

Is that then a vote for bean and cheese burritos or bolognese?

with all due respect, how can bean and cheese burritos make the final list? That was in the top three?? It beat grilled cheese and peanut butter? Liverwurst?

Bean and cheese burritos got 2 nominations.

Grilled cheese, peanut butter and liverwurst both got one nomination shy of zero. Combined.

What about topping a dish with egg (eg. Fried egg on pizza, soft boiled egg in ramen)?

Yes to pizza. No to ramen.

I think the question we should be asking if EGGS is the winner is the following: Does the egg contribute to the quiddity of the dish?

With pizza, esp. ones like Little Dom's breakfast pizza or Mozza's egg and bacon pie, the egg sort of makes those pizzas the pizzas that they are.

I can't think of a particular ramen dish where the egg contributes to the ramen qua ramen. While I'm no expert on ramen, generally the defining qualities of ramen are the broth (e.g. shio, miso, tonkotsu, etc.) and to some extent the noodles. While there are always accouterments like pork and egg and the like, none of those additions are probably the reason you order that particular bowl of ramen.

In other words, but for the egg would you have ordered that bowl of ramen?

All of that said, if there is a bowl of ramen out there that is defined by the addition of an egg, then by all means ... yes!

Though I think the egg in ramen *when done right* is as critical as egg topping a pizza, I am okay with playing by whatever rules are set.

                                            EGGS

If there's a bowl of ramen that you would seek out simply because of the addition of the egg, then by all means lets hear about it (assuming eggs is the winner)!

Are we also including non poultry eggs?

Bottarga, tuna bottarga (Sotto), codfish egg, compressed octopus eggs, uni, ikura, caviar...
