chanteclers testing menu- one word: inspired!
Yesterday my husband and I went to Chantecler to experience their new tasting menu. Thus far, we haven't enjoyed many of the tasting menu experiences in Toronto as much as we have enjoyed it in some other cities. We have previously been disappointed with the carte blanche at Edulis and tasting menu at Georges, satisfied with the tasting menu at Scarpetta and Scaramouche(lobsterlicious) but enjoyed it at colborne and Yours Truly. We weren't sure what to expect at Chantecler as we had not eaten here before and for $40, I really wasnt expecting tooo much.
The cost of the tasting menu is $40 (which is super reasonable for toronto pricing standards) and if you opt for a wine pairing it is an additional $45 (we opted for a la carte drinks). Between my husband and I we ordered four glasses of wine and our bill before tip (but including taxes) was $140.
The service was impeccable- we sat at the bar and had some wonderful conversations with the bar tender.
First item was a beef tartare in a lettuce cup, the tartare had a strong kick of wasabi, it also had rice puffs drizzled in mustard oil (very reminiscent of moori from bangladesh)... this was delicious and got me very excited for the rest of the evening
second item: an oyster baked with panko crust (this was tasty but nothing that I have not had before in toronto)
Third item: sliced calamari (spaghetti style) with sliced celery, this was served with what appeared to be a lime and ponzu jelly- This was so refreshing and delicious (very reminiscent of a dish I have eaten at Cinc Sentits)
Fourth item: Yum! This was a baked tofu drizzled in chilli oil...it was so simple but something I had never has before!! (picture attached)
Fifth item: Delicious creamy prawns served in a jar with home made bread and seaweed butter- this could have potentially been my favourite dish
Fifth item: Duck breast with kale, creamy polenta and beet sauce- beautiful presentation and perfectly crisp skin. (picture attached)
sixth item: a beef consomme served in a tea cup called faux tea. At this point I was so full that the beef consomme with a hint of lemon grass and star anise was more than welcome.
seventh a vanile icecream coated with cereal, chocolate chips - sort of like a granola bar ice cream:) - it was lovely probably the second least inspired dish (after the oysters) but delicious nonetheless.
finally- a poached pear with a thick caramel toffee coating...by this point I was too full and my husband was happy to finish my share
I will absolutely be returning to Chantecler in the near future to try their tasting menu once it has new items!! I truly loved my dinner there and would highly recommend it!!
Glad you had a great meal! I've already been back a second time (Friday) for this tasting meal, and so far, still awesome. I think we had a premium placed on ours ($55) as we had geoduck instead of calamari.
