Survey: McDonald Fish McBites

Chemicalkinetics Feb 21, 2013 05:53 PM

Plain and simple. A survey poll for people who have eaten the Fish McBites. I am curious how we stand on this new introduction.

On a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being great, and 1 being horrible), where do you stand for the Fish McBites?

1) Disgusting. I won't eat them again even if you pay me to.
2)
3) Ok. I will eat them if they are in front of me, but I don't go out of my way to get them
4)
5) Worth every penny, and I am definitely going back to have some.

Please feel free to provide your detail thought
Thank you for your participation.

    My take is 2)
    Too doughy breading.

Final Update. A few more votes, but the overall score distribution is about the same. Thanks for your help.

Considered that I got Fish McBites 4 times since the beginning of this post. I think I should upgrade my score from 4 to 5. Obviously, I like it enough to get Fish McBites 4 times in a row without getting anything else.

Nice work....now you need to start a new thread......your favorite one dollar item.

i nominate the one buck cone or one dollar coffee...both are great value.

Can we do Wendy's too? Never been but thinking of checking it out......

Not a Wendy's regular....only go to them when on the road and do not know anywhere else in the particular area. But their burgers and chili are good for fast food in my opinion. Off their dollar menu, I've had their fries and Chicken Nuggets....perfectly acceptable for a quick pinch to satisfy the belly when you do not want to load up.

As the single best item off the dollar menu or not......The Frosty, without question for me.

Thanks, we are on the road a lot lately so have been trying out a few fast food things when there are BOGO deals. We eat healthy enough at home, so what the heck. Makes hubby happy anyway!

tea and coffee both are good deals at a buck each.

mr. alka will go for the $1 breakfast burrito (sausage).

the $1 mcdouble extra pickles is our other choice.

        2. tcamp Mar 14, 2013 11:56 AM

2.4 (round down). I stopped to let a van-full of boy scouts snarf down food and to get a coffee. Fish bites were displayed so I took one for the team.

Not so great and too much breading. I wish they had better sauce options - then I probably would eat more of the bites.

          1. pinehurst Mar 11, 2013 04:21 PM

Also too late for the poll, howevah...

            2.5

The taste of the fish itself was very good. However, the fish portion of the order (I got a 10 piece box) was far, far too little to warrant the ~$4.00 I paid. If they upped the size to McNugget size, it would be ideal.

Also, not a deal breaker, but the fish was too flaky for dipping in tartar sauce. Any attempts to introduce bite to sauce (using a fork or fingers) resulted in shreds of fish disintegrating into the tartar sauce.

The price was the real killer for me. For 4 bucks and nary a dent in me belly, I'd spend a couple of extra bucks to get some frozen shrimp or a filet of real fish. Too bad, because the taste was good.

You are correct about the flakiness; I kept having to lick that damned Bearnaise offf my fingers :)

I too would have felt ripped off had I paid $4.00 for my 10 piece box. Don't know if the $3.50 for your choice of 2 (FOF/Mcbites/fries) is a Friday thing or a regional thing or both.
I was waiting to order at the drive thru when I saw the offer flashing on the menu board

Yes...I too think it's an individual site thing. I remember that McD's in my area would run a 2 for 3.33 special on any combo of large fries/Filet o Fish in this season, but I've searched for a similar one in vain this year.

Would LOVE to get two orders of the McBites for 3.50. Wow.

Too late for the survey but I just tried these Friday and was pleasantly surprised. Nicely cooked with light breading. $3.50 for a box of 10 and a nice portion of fries. I actually had to pull through the drive thru and wait for them. This might explain the fresh cooked aspect; go at 5pm on a Friday when everything is fresh out of thr fryer.

Since I'll go back this Friday for more I guess I fit the criteria for a 5. I can't tell you how pleasantly surprised I was (although the fact that I drove home and dunked them in some leftover Bearnaise might have something to do with my pleasure).

I should have thought of that, my wife wanted to use them for fish sandwiches in hotdog buns.

And if you're adding to your survey I'd rate them a 3. I never go out of my way for fast food

We had fish McBite tacos for dinner tonight. They were pretty good.

I had the tortillas warmed and the toppings prepared and my wife stopped for the fish on her way home. We were eating five minutes after she walked in the door.

a slightly lop-sided distribution curve. pretty cool.

i think you need to make it more sophisticated and weight the responses according to whether the respondent likes mcdonalds filet o' fish.

hot, crunchy, decent fish flavor….i'd buy them again in a heartbeat if they were reasonably priced. i got my "snack" size on a promotion for $1, and it was about 6 or 7 bites? but i understand the snack size is regularly priced at $2.39 or something like that? nah… i'll save up and go to the all you can eat fish fry at my local english pub on fridays.

as to the tartar sauce, i didn't even try the one that came with the mcbites because, ahem, i was driving.

By the way, I went for McBites the third time. This time I got honey mustard. Oh, and I got the Shamrock shake as well. This time the McBites are much more like the first times. A slightly crunchy shell, but soft. The interior fish is flaky and soft, but not mushy. Better than the second time.

Alright. I went back to get another Fish McBites. This time I got the BBQ sauce with my order. The McBites crust is thicker and crispier this time, but I actually prefer my the lighter and softer crust from last time. The fish is still great. Overall, I still like the McBites quiet a bit.

                                        I am still giving it a 4.

I ordered the $1 sample....I don't know if it was a mistake or not, but I got 10 pieces in the snack pack.....I think the snack size was $2.29....I thought they were actually pretty good.

the tarter sauce in the plastic cup was small, but adequate in amount for dipping.

I got at least 10 pieces in the $1 special too, and the girl didn't know about the deal so I don't think it was trying to bribe me or anything. The manager told her it was the "small" McBites. Pretty decent, I could have made a meal out of it.

Since there are a few replies about the lack of tartar sauce, I feel I need to say something.

For disclosure, I went to a drive-thru and ordered the large size McBites. The guy asked me what kind of sauce I want with the McBites. I asked: "What kind of sauces do you have?" He replied "Tartar sauce, Barbecue...." I stopped him, and said that I want tartar sauce. I cannot be sure, but I felt he was going to say a third one.

In other words, (A) I didn't have to ask to get my sauce, and (B) there was more than one possible option -- for me.

                                                      I think I would give them a 3 1/2.

I live in a small town and our McDonalds is way better than the typical McD's. The owner is in there every day working his ass off. So, I would not be surprised if my rating would be lower if they had come from a different store.

When I finally received my order, I checked the bag and there was no tartar sauce, so I asked for it. There was a sign, declaring that extra condiments cost $0.25.

When I told the counter-person that there was no tartar sauce they told me it was in the bag. I had to empty the bag and show them that there was no sauce. They grudgingly handed one over. I left with the distinct impression that they thought I was trying to scam them out of $0.25 worth of condiment.

#3, they were OK, portion size was generous for the price, about $3.50 for the medium size, 10-12 pieces.

However, there was an aftertaste of not so fresh cooking oil. That might have been just my location. Didn't really like the tartar sauce and I had to argue with the drive through person to get it.

I gave one piece to my dog, and he snubbed it.

That's probably the difference with the order I got, the fresh oil. I worked at a chain restaurant for a few years; I was the day cook and rotated/changed the oil every morning. I'm not a big fried food fan, and would only eat something fried if it was the first thing cooked in the new oil. That's sort of what my fish mcnuggets tasted like....and if they were like we were, chicken is cooked separately from fish and that makes a big difference too. I'm sure some locations take a short cut or two.

                                                            I am going to give a (4).

I thought the crust/breading was a bit soft, but definitely still crunchy. The fish was moist, tender, yet with a texture of real fish. The tartar sauce is definitely a bit thin, but I can appreciate it being thin, so that it does not overwhelm the fish.

Love it. I almost going to give it a (5), but it wasn't really perfect. Big thumb up for me.

There could be some human error involved, despite all the safeguards. I know technically they should be the same, all over the world; but weird that so many thought they were terrible. I too thought it was very nice, and actually ate more than I wanted to. They were crispy, the breading was very nice, and although I'm sure it was pollack the fish was great.

I do know the last launch of McRib was definitely different from shops to shops. Some people said there was only 1 pickles. I ordered McRib twice. I had 2 to 3 pickles. Some complained there was little BBQ sauce. Mine had sauce dripping out of the sandwich. These are not difference in opinions. These are real factual differences.

Didn't work at all. They weren't disgusting but I won't be having them again even if offered. Note: I took no sauce and am not aware if any are offered.
