LA Trip Report (incl. Mori Sushi)

stravaigint Feb 21, 2013 01:43 PM

Friday 9am to Sunday 2pm

Milo and Olive: Sat at the counter. The Croque Milo was excellent, as was the Sweet Cream Brioche that Max recommended -- thanks!

Urth Caffe (SM): Expected it to be all scene and no substance, but they knocked out a surprisingly good macchiato.

Mori Sushi: Arrived promptly at 11:45am for a reservation and was the only person there. I guess folks in LA eat late? Was shown to the very left of the bar in front of a really affable itamae (not Maru-san, but no complaints here, this guy was stellar). Asked for nigiri omakase and said that I eat everything, which I then proceeded to do. All courses plus two extra rounds of kohada and buri, then whipped tofu dessert. Heaven. The rice really is as amazing as everyone says it is. If I'm to judge only on the sushi, this was a notch above Urasawa. I'll have to return to try the cooked dishes too. BTW to the three guys from Douche Canoe, Inc. who showed up, sat at the bar for omakase and then asked for the kappa-maki...I have no words...

Too full to make it to Amandine and Short Cake.

Lawry's: Diamond Jim Brady cut, face plant into creamed corn.

Intelligentsia (SL): Fantastic espresso, mocha and almond croissant. And a great place to read the paper at 6am.

Sycamore Kitchen: The Pork Belly Hash rendered me immobile.

LACMA Cafe: Another fantastic Intelligentsia Black Cat espresso. Thoroughly enjoyed the Kubrick exhibition.

The Crow Bar and Kitchen (OC): Intended to go to The Playground but it was closed (mid-afternoon), so ended up here. The Black Label Burger and duck fat fries did the trick.

Animal: Walked in Saturday night and got lucky with an open seat at the counter. Really enjoyed this, highly recommended for solo dining. Had the Hamachi Tostada (fabulous), Pig Ear (tasty), Crispy Pig Head (worth the wait, thanks Michael!) and Sticky Toffee Pudding (OMFG). Many thanks to Jeff behind the counter for the suggestions!

Urth Caffe (BH): Terrible cappuccino, but a stellar chocolate croissant.

Square One Dining: Braised mustard and collard greens with mushrooms and gruyere on grits, two pieces of thick-cut bacon. That pig died for a good cause.

Handsome Coffee Roasters: Mocha and espresso (Dapper), probably my favorite coffee of the trip. Did not get to try the Egg Slut.

Mother Moo: Salty Chocolate was good, if subtle (moreso than the Salted Caramel at Bi-Rite). But the Ginger was out of this world! Was denied candied ginger to-go. Left with a jar of Mothercluck's Three-Citrus marmelade (all gone...anyone want to mail me some?).

I agree completely. Sushi alone, I also find it a notch above Urasawa.

Thanks for the great report back. Sounds like you had a blast.

Glad I'm not alone in thinking that! Japan aside, that puts it at the top slot for me, which means now I have to try Masa.

Nice report! Glad you caught the Kubrick exhibit.

You seemed to hit a lot of good coffee/breakfast/brunch places. I would recommend trying the 1-2 punch of Proof and Canele in Atwater if you ever get a chance.

Note to all re: Proof - croissants are like 4 bucks a pop and the almond flavoring in the almond croissant is very subtle.

evidently it's in the french style, not the american style.

That seems about right from their menu -- Paris-Brest! Have you had their ham & gruyere croissant?

nah, I was in a croissant phase and tried both their almond and butter croissant.

I'll dissent and say I'm in no hurry to go back

The exhibit was fascinating; I would have stayed for the symposium too, if not for the trip to OC.

Regarding Proof and Canele, gah, not sure how I missed them, but they're on the list for next time. Thanks!

You truly knocked it out of the park food wise! Thanks for the report back!! :)

Wonderful report and the eating was, I'm sure, better to the Nth degree. If you don't mind telling, what did your Mori session end up dinging your bank balance for?

If you like ice hockey maybe you can arrange to meet up with unhockey for a once in a life time, knock it out of the park - calorie destruction of the Los Angeles area next visit? Just the fact that the report would stretch into a full years worth of weekly reports would be worth the time to absorb it all...(see below for a couple of unholy unhockey post LA reports as examples)

I'll PM you the damage to my wallet ;-)

As for unhockey, I'm in awe. We would need to have an industrial-sized container of Tums at the ready, along with a small fortune. I must dig out his other threads.

My apologies, To keep this chowish, on a somewhat recent visit a few months back, Mori Sushi was beyond fucking exceptional. No joke. The equal of many joints around town (though I won't be able to compare to Ginza sushi ko, since I have not been yet).

My bad, I meant Urasawa, not Ginza sushiko. Man, I missed out on Ginza Sushiko too.

                    Excellent report back!

On behalf of the rest of the city, I apologize for the occasional d-bag sightings.

Thanks to J.L.'s glowing report of Nozawa Bar, I'm planning another trip for July. It's going to be a bit of a sushi blowout: I've booked Nozawa for dinner on the Thursday and Mori for the Saturday. Most other meals I can sort out.

But I could use some hound help for the Friday.

Lunch at Zo (or possibly Kiriko?), dinner at RM
                      Lunch wherever, dinner at Shunji

Many of you have reported very favorably about Shunji. But it seems he's moved very much towards kaiseki rather than sushi, is that true? Or can I still request mostly sushi, which is what I plan to do at Mori?

And yes, I promise to PM the damage to everyone after the trip :P

yes, I do it all the time.

there are many whorthwhile cooked dishes too - you can order them if you like a la carte as well.

Thanks Bob! It's not that I dislike like the cooked dishes (I'd really like to try the bleu cheese balls Kevin keeps raving about), it's just that I want to pack in as much nigiri as possible.

I prefer sushi/sashimi most of the time, so that's what I get...but the age-dashi tomato is very special. The blue cheese balls do not do it for me nearly as much.

                          Ciao Bob is correct.

You can order just a sushi omakase and then to gild the lilly order a few of the cooked or rather small plate composed dishes too such as the tomato agedashi tofu, the bleu cheese balls, the monkfish liver with caviar. mmm mmm mmmm good.

and don't forget the chocolate mousse for dessert.
