Italian Restaurant in Quebec ordered to stop using "Italian" names including Pasta on Menu
This is just ridiculous:
For those that know, there are strict language laws in Quebec to protect the French language. This sure seems to be going a bit too far.
Sounds like they are re-considering the "pasta" change but some of the other items are going to alienate tourists and even locals...

In France, it is usually called Pasta.
Ironically in France, Les Québécoises are not thought of very highly themselves, as the perception is that they buttcher the French language.
My wife and I have witnessed this many times in Paris, especially with Taxi drivers.. To translate, it usually goe like this.
" What ? " What was that you say ? " ( Hands go up as if to summon the heavens ). Then " Where are you from ? "
" Oh, you are Québécois ! Get out of here !!! " ( with a dismissive wave of the hand ).
It can be quite rude.
Of course when they then find out next that we are Suisse, the jokes start about us being as tight as a Suisse watch, not tipping, and other teasing comments. But at least we get to our destination.
When the Bloc Quebecois first came to power back in the 1970s and introduced strict French language laws one of the long term reactions was that it accelerated the movement of major companies to Toronto. Before that Montreal had been the biggest finance and business center in Canada and Toronto a more provincial backwater city. Not so these days. It's now the reverse, actually.
I'm all for protecting languages as part of the regional identity but the Bloc Quebecois are shooting themselves in the foot too often.
