Fernandes 3 - Sayerville, NJ

Fernandes has taken over the old La Marina restaurant in Sayerville, just north of the Morgan bridge. I noticed the sign and the "Rodizio" sign on Sunday and made it a point to get there as soon as possible.

We went last night and had the rodizio and a pitcher of sangria. OMG, it was awesome. Service was great, and the food was awesome too. I almost had to order a wheel chair. Having never been to the first and/or second Fernades in the Ironbound, I can't compare. But there are a few Portuguese/Spanish places around that I won't have to go back to now.

Just thought I'd throw a post up here and let you guys know. No more need to drive to Newark.

  1. FINALLY! I have been waiting to hear something on chowhound. I had no doubt it would be good but this has me pumped up. I am a huge fan of Fernandes in Newark so this is much closer.

    How was the ribeye and how about the short ribs? (two of my top choices)

    short ribs can be hit or miss at most places but Fernandes usually gets them right.

      Hey Johnny, because of the above thread and your post, my family and I went to Fernandes 3 Sunday night. Of the 3 rodizios I have been to in NJ, this was the best. (To me the best top tier rodizio is Platforma in NYC). Dinner was great. My favorites were the garlic steak, flank steak - which was perfectly rare, and the bacon wrapped lamb. All of it was good like the juicy chicken wings, the various cuts of beef, and I really loved the sausage - it was more like a kielbasa in flavor instead of the expected chorizo.

      Also a nice touch was the grilled cinnamon sugared pineapple for dessert. The only negative was the salad bar which stunk, the meat made up for it though. Really the perfect dinner in the midst of winter when you are hankering for grilled/bbq meats. Thanks for the tip.

        NICE! I am glad to hear you liked it.

        Are you sure they served chicken wings? Most serve very small legs because they are so much cheaper. Remember when wings use to be cheap? Now they are by far the most expensive part of the chicken.

          CJ you didn't steer me wrong with the steak at Copper Canyon so I'm going to trust you on this one as well. I think I'm going to make a point of going this weekend. I will report back my findings!

            Hey JR. I can almost guarantee it will be decent, if not very good. Fernandes 2 has a cult like following and a big reputation to uphold. I don't think they would want their name associated with a below average restaurant. As a fellow meat lover, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. I might get there too so I will report back.

            Remember, sometimes they hold out on the short ribs and you have to ask for them. Certain places serve them "Dinosaur" style (I like to call it)

              I think they were tiny drumsticks. Although I don't eat dark meat usually.. they were bacon wrapped and awesome.

              I dont recall short ribs being served to us.. but at our amatuerish attempt.. we just about tapped out 1 or 2 rounds early... saving for the pineapple.

              Something I've never tried before that I did try there was chicken hearts. Not at all what I was expecting, and I'd try a few again.

              My fiancee really liked the dehydrated grilled mozzerella served from the spit.

              They also had a cut of beef.. can't remember which cut.. but it was sort of injected with mozzerella, and served pretty much rare. My fiancee declined, but I partook, and I usually dont eat anythign cooler than medium well.. but it was delicious.

    2. I have to get over there. It's literally a 3 minute drive from my house. Did anybody happen to notice if there's draft beer there? BF is picky about his beverage of choice. Thanks.

      1. I can't help with Fernandes 3....but I thought I'd jump in to say the absolute best piece of meat I ever experienced at a Rodizio.....was at a Brasilia. The cut of meat was the hump you see on the back of a Steer. If they offer it, you should give it a was flavorful and melted like butta....

        1. Ok went last night......I was finished eating by approximately 8pm and I am still stuffed as I type this over 12 hours later.

          Listen people, those of you who pay any attention to my posts have probably figured out already, Jr isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. I really do need proper adult supervision when I go out. It has been years since I've been to a Rodizio and like any 10 year old my eyes were way bigger than my stomach.

          I will agree the salad bar is disappointing.....but in the big picture what are a few leaves of lettuce going to do when your about to consume 20lbs of beef? The meat is very good....both in quality and variety. All the staples are there and all were very tasty. Keep in mind IMHO all of these places use a very heavily salted rub on the meats so after awhile the tastes start to all blend together but all in all you certainly get your moneys worth.

          The place is nice, clean and well spread out. The service was excellent and it is certainly a place to give a try. The menu us extensive and there are plenty of non-meat options if dining with someone who is offended by a side of cow being brought to your table every two minutes.

          As the matter of fact if I was going to be critical of the place it would be the server was almost too attentive. He was literally at the table every 2 minutes with a new selection to try. I had to tell him a few times to give me 5 minutes to come back.

          CJ the ribeye/prime rib was a fresh cut so it was a little fatty since it was the first cut off the exterior (to be expected) but the meat was very flavorful. The short ribs were very good too however I do not believe this form of cooking does a short rib justice. I prefer them slowly braised rather than grilled but they were both of good size and flavor.

            I am glad to see you got there! I unfortunately didn't make it.

            As you mentioned, I don't rate these places on salad either.

            And yes, I like a good braised short rib myself : )

            Any interesting cuts that aren't found at traditional rodizio joints?

              Btw they had chicken hearts. I could take them or leave them. I don't get what the fuss is all about with them, people seem to love them.

              I only mentioned the salad bar as Platforma has always been my point of comparison, but that probably isn't fair.

                The only "unique" items in my opinion were a cheese encrusted pork and later a cheese encrusted steak of some sort. (Forget which cut it was)

                Also a nice touch were grilled shrimp and grilled stripped bass. The stripped bass was actually very good.

                They had the chicken hearts which I've seen at other places as well they were tasty but chewy as always.

            2. We finally made it Saturday night. Got there about 5:30 & sat at the bar. I originally ordered the fried whiting, but they were out of it, so we both ended up with fried filet of sole that was served with 3 fried shrimp, 3 fried scallops & a side of rice. The sole was 2 nice big pieces & the entire meal was delicious. We will definitely go back. If anyone else decides to go, I would suggest you get there before 7:00 pm. That's when it really started getting crowded & by the time we left around 7;45, we could barely squeeze our way out the door.

                  Nope, no rodizio, but we did see a few tables ordering. We couldn't believe some of the sizes of those hunks of meat. Hope you get to go soon.
