Nice Uptown bars

  • 2

My wife and I are visiting New Orleans next week, and we'll be spending most of our time in the French Quarter. However, we do have one late dinner reservation for Commander's Palace. Since this will probably be our only excursion uptown, does anyone recommend any stops before or after the dinner, keeping in mind that we'll both be dressed up?

I imagine that we'll hit Columns Hotel for a drink either before or after. However, would Columns still be a good spot on a Thursday night if we didn't make it there until 11pm or so? Or should I concentrate on making it there before dinner?

I was also thinking about taking the streetcar down from Canal to Columns or Commander's. Would we be too out of place dressed up at night?

    1. A short cab ride will get you from Commander's to Bellocq, a good cocktail bar in the Hotel Modern in Lee Circle. You might try that place for cocktails. It's older sister, Cure, is located further Uptown on Freret Street and has great drinks. I would think either would fit the bill. I'm not sure if the Columns will be too quiet at that hour. Another option outside the FQ (if you can make it in time) for something "dressed up" and "refined" you might try the Polo Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Windsor Court. They probably close by midnight, though. I'd check ahead. They may have some jazz too.
