Need recs for dinner for 8 this Saturday - kinda late, I know!
A group of us are all coming in to Chicago from out of town for a reunion trip and we're just now realizing we don't have a reservation anywhere for Saturday night. I know we're probably out of luck for a lot of places but I'd love recommendations for places to think about. Any type of cuisine is fine, we're all pretty adventurous and as long as it's not crazy expensive, our budget is pretty flexible.
Open Table is showing some nice venues with availability for eight that day.
MK is an upscale venue featuring contemporary American cuisine. Nice varied menu and reasonable prices for a high end restaurant.
Henri: I have not been here myself, but heard nice things about this venue. Features French cuisine.
Hugo's Frog Bar: Seafood emphasis.
Then there are steakhouses such as Mastro's, Carmichaels, Fogo de Chao etc.
Everest and L20 (Michelin star venues) both have openings, but may be in the "crazy expensive" category depending on your budget.
Opentable is indeed a very easy way to find availability at the last minute. And you'll have more choices depending on how flexible you are regarding what time you eat. Here are some more openings there right now at other worthy places in/near downtown, in addition to those mentioned above:
The Florentine (Italian) - 8:00
Mexique (contemporary Mexican) - 5:00
Province (small plates, contemporary global) - wide open, any time you want
Quartino (small plates Italian) - 6:00, later "restricted" meaning you have to phone
Sepia (American) - 6:00, 9:15
Shaw's (seafood) - 6:00, 9:00
TRU (high-end) - 5:30, 8:15
Incidentally, if you are willing to go to an expensive dressy high-end place, TRU is IMHO the second-best restaurant in Chicago right now (after Alinea).
You don't mention where you'll all be staying. Somewhere in the greater downtown area, I assume? If not, please let us know, since if you're in a suburb or outlying city neighborhood there may be good places conveniently close by. Even if you're in the city, if you tell us where you're staying (hotel name or nearby intersection), we can let you know which of these is nearby.
