Cookbook of the Month 2013: The Voting Thread

Although there was a clear frontrunner this month, after a reasonably quiet nomination period, the general consensus seems to be for a run-off. So here it is!

Please cast your votes for one of the following

EVERY GRAIN OF RICE by Fuchsia Dunlop - Chinese home cooking by a Chowhound Favourite

AD HOC AT HOME by Thomas Keller - family-style cooking from one of America's top chefs

BURMA by Nancy Duguid - discover a lesser-known Asian cuisine

For more info on the nomination process, check here:

Voting will close at 0800 on Thursday, 21st February, or midnight PST on the 20th. I await your choice and will post the winner as soon as I can!

  1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE. Thanks greedygirl!

    1. AD HOC AT HOME. Thank you.

          1. BURMA

No clear favourite for me so I asked mr bc to select. He liked the look of the chicken and curry dishes in this one. Thanks gg!

              1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE

                Thanks GG!

                  1. I've got an impressive stack of large discs of tua nao in my pantry, waiting patiently to be used, so there can really only be one book on this list that I can vote for. BURMA it is!

                            1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE

Purely for the selfish reason of needing to clean my pantry out and I have a lot of Chinese ingredients to use up. The other two sound great as well and I would love to cook from them in the future. Thanks GG!

                                1. This new board format is HORRID. I never even saw the nomination thread and I didn't know greedygirl had taken the coordinator role. I am WAY behind here.

For the first time, I actually own two of the nominated books. I will sit back and see what the outcome is.

Not user freindly, that's for sure! The best is to start checking the top red posts and inside there will be a link to nominations, voting and reporting thread for both the COTM and the DOTM. COTM nominations start around 10th of the month and DOTM maybe 20-something of the month.

Good to have you back with us, Smtucker :)

                                    1. re: smtucker

ditto, I totally was out of the loop too save for BCs notice that came up on the earlier thread, Dave MP where are you to fix this horrid situation?

honestly, I would like to do both Burma and the Dunlop book, but I dont feel prepared to decide.

                                      1. re: jen kalb

Me three on this. If BC hadn't posted a link in the previous nomination thread (for February) I wouldn't have known it was time to vote for the March book.

I really miss the old "stickies"; now I have to click more times to access the COTM threads. That seems like a step backwards away from user-friendly design.

And as for those quick links to COTM/DOTM -- they don't even appear in my mobile browser. If any mods or designers are reading this I hope you are working on that issue!

                                        1. re: geekmom

I totally forgot about putting a link in the Feb thread. Will try to remember to do that next time.

                                          1. re: greedygirl

Wouldn't it go into the march nominating thread? Thanks for everything, gg.

                                            1. re: beetlebug

Normally yes bb but I noticed nomination participation was much higher in Feb and I suspected folks might not have been aware we were already voting for March. It turns out that was the case.

I can't stand those "Quick Links" - Why CH would marginalize the COTM, one of the highest traffic features on CH is baffling. It feels like some crazy video game where, in order to get access to the secret COTM threads one must first find the tiny font hidden words and then, click on the right sequence of keys....madness. Incredibly frusrating and unnecessarily time consuming. Its pretty bad when those of us who know its there don't even see it because it's faded into the background of the site now.

Dave, please return the COTM to its rightful place of prominance on this site.

                                              1. re: beetlebug

Now I'm confused - I did put a link to the voting thread in the March nomination thread. But I didnt' announce in the Feb nomination thread that nominations were now open for March, which maybe I should have done. This is making my brain hurt tbh!

                                                1. re: greedygirl

I don't think there's any standard practice for this gg. I just thought this would be a good idea since a number of folks have commented about either not being aware of/able to find the COTM and with the new format, the issue is compounded because even those of us who do know about the COTM don't have a visual cue to alert us to the nominations and voting any longer. The totally ineffective, not-so-"Quick Links" read the same no matter what's going on whereas in the past, our stickies clearly alerted us to the fact something was happening - be it nominations or voting or, the latest selection announcement.

                                        2. re: smtucker

The Quick Link Format is Ridiculous. Why are the COTM-DOTM kept so secretive? It certainly is Not a quick link to anything. It takes me Three clicks to get to what I want... Horrid, indeed.

                                          1. re: smtucker

I would like to see it going back to the old ways too. Stickies for nominations, voting and thn participation threads for COTM and DOTM. I'm usually on my ipad so I can't see the quick links. This new layout is just awful.

I will refrain from voting for march as I'm not sure I can find the time to cook. I have every grain of rice so might cook a dish or two if it is selected.

PS ok I can see the quick links. It's very very WELL HIDDEN!

                                            1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE, please. Thank you gg.

                                                  1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE -- Fuschia Dunlop
                                                    Thank you, greedygirl!

                                                    1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE

Made my first dish from this book last night. Easy, healthy and delicious!

                                                      Thanks, gg.

                                                            1. AD HOC AT HOME.

It's the one I own. I would, however, buy Burma. I'll have to look further into "every grain," just because I don't like rice! I'm sure there is more to it, however.

                                                              Thanks greedygirl!

                                                                      1. re: herby

                                                                          1. EVERY GRAIN OF RICE

Like some others, I missed the nomination thread. I've saved the thread to my profile now so it should show up in my saved discussions when a new round of nominations or voting is added.

As much as I want to see Burma be COTM, I'm going to be out of town for half of March, and I have a feeling that I won't have time to get into a new cuisine. EGOR is a book I'm more likely to use when things are hectic.

                                                                              1. AD HOC AT HOME, please.

                                                                                        1. Hi folks. Just a reminder that there are just over 12 hours left to vote! Voting closes at 0800 GMT on 21 Feb, which is midnight tonight PST, or 2100 EST. Thanks.

My vote is for EVERY GRAIN OF RICE.

                                                                                          1. Really, I could get excited about any one of these books. So I guess I'll let you all decide : )

                                                                                            1. Wow, this is close. I can be happy with any of the cookbooks.
