Hop Louie? Mijares?

A person on my Scrabble newsgroup was touting 2 L.A. restaurants I'd never heard of. I haven't lived in L.A. for about 20 years, but I still visit, but I don't know much about the restaurant scene. Are these two restaurants (one Chinese, the other Mexican, any good? Great? Terrible?

Any info greatly appreciated.

  1. Mijares is a long-time Gringo Mexican favorite in Pasadena. Not really worth your time.

I've never heard of hop Louie.

Mijares = think Acapulco with a breakfast menu.

    2. Run, not walk away from Hop Louie.

There must've been a time when Hop Louie was decent, right?

They've been around, for what?, something like 10+ years at least, right?

Opened in the mid-1980s. Successor to Golden Pagoda. I remember going there when it opened, and it wasn't much good back then, at least foodwise. Might be a good watering hole.

Yes, not great for food. Good to just hang out and have a beer. They have an interesting mix of people that filter through there. Really not a destination place though.

Unless you happen to be a really big fan of the movie I Love You, Man.

      2. Mijares has a good happy hour(s).
