How is Ariyoshi in Sunnyside?

I searched the boards and found only very old posts that didn't really say much. In looking at the menu, it is one of the few places that have sasamochi for dessert. Last time I had sasamochi was in Kyoto, Japan. and before that at Taka and Fukuda.
The cooked food on the menu sounds good. Not sure about the sushi,but it seems that the place is run by Japanese people.
Has anyone been there lately? is the cooked food good? Is the sushi good ( compared to Manhattan best sushi)?

  1. There is no sushi in Queens compared to the best sushi in Manhattan. Ariyoshi is a par neighborhood place. It's not very good. Takesushi, nearby, is better; the best sushi in Sunnyside. But let's be realistic here--not as good as the best in Manhattan.

    1. We went there once over a year ago. As MarcinSunnysideGardens says, it was mediocre, not that great, and we've never been back.

      If you aren't looking for authentic Japanese food, TJ Asian Bistro on Skillman has some decent food and a guy who is knowledgeable about sake. Certainly not Japanese staff, but you know, you don't always want to make the trek to Manhattan and we always enjoy the hamachi kama there.

      1. Ariyoshi is terrible. TJ Asian Bistro has very good rolls and miso soup, and if you get the lunch special, it's insanely cheap for the amount of food.

        2. I live a block from Ariyoshi and I pass by it all of the time since Takesushi had opened in the neighborhood. Takesushi has far superior fish and Japanese food

          As someone said they are the best Sushi place in Sunnyside, and I think all of Queens.

            But Ariyoshi is more of an izakaya, is it not?

              It was the Izakaya dishes that got my attention. In reading their story on the website, I was impressed that they have been around since 1975 and Japanese owned and run. In 1975 not too many Americans ate sushi. It appears they must have started out as a sushi restaurant offering soups, noodles, and cooked meats and fish. The all around Japanese restaurant like a Japonica or Takahachi. Then they seem to have added an Izakaya menu. I trust the CH's who have steered me away. But their website and menu make it tempting. But I will stay away until i hear something is good there.
