Cookbook for a "meat and potatoes" man who would like to branch out

The other day, my husband and I went out to dinner with another couple; after dinner, we all decided to stop in the grocery store for a few things. The other couple are not married and do not live together, which is why this question is posed just about the man. While discussing the parsley that he had started already (he has a great garden), I asked if he had ever grown basil and made pesto. He said he hadn't grown basil and didn't know what pesto is, that he doesn't really know about a lot of different foods, he's just a meat and potatoes guy.

So....I thought that it might be nice to give him a cookbook that branches out a little, but won't intimidate him. I would send him to this website, but he doesn't really use computers. Is this a good idea? If so, what would be a good cookbook?

  1. I think it's kind of you to want to help him expand his horizons if he so desires. Mark Bittman's "How to Cook Everything" would be a great place to start.

      1. The Flexitarian Cookbook, which I understand has both meat and vegitarian versions of the same recipes. I have not looked at it but it has been discussed a lot on this board.

        1. If he is a meat and potatoes guy I would imagine he'd connect with Alice Waters' The Green Kitchen. It is a lovely book and will not overwhelm him.

            While I like (and own) Mark Bittman's cookbook, I was thinking more of a cookbook that would help direct him to new foods. You put it well, Mr. Irvine--Bittman could be overwhelming. I will check out The Green Kitchen.

            Thank you all for your input. If he does decide to increase his repertoire, I will definitely get him the Bittman cookbook!

          2. I'm currently reading "The 4-hour chef" by Tim Ferriss. I think this would be a great book for a novice cook. It guides you from nothing through a whole wealth of food related areas, including a section dedicated to the wild, hunting and survival.

            The writer is not a chef, but a home cook who has essentially documented, in detail, his learning experiences. He also outlines a learning plan to help someone who doesn't cook to start cooking on a regular basis.
